‘Jurassic Park’ Films Won’t Be Returning to Theaters, Will Continue on the Small Screen

The Jurassic Park film series may never return to theaters. The Jurassic franchise has been delivering dino-packed action since its inception with Steven Spielberg’s original 1993 film, which remains one of the most successful blockbusters of all time. Fast-forward 33 years, and we’re now seven films deep into the series following last year’s sequel, Jurassic World Rebirth (2025), which grossed $869.1 M worldwide.Directed by Gareth Edwards (Rogue One), the film severs ties with the Jurassic World trilogy by rewriting certain events and introducing a new cast led by Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame). However, despite being billed as “the start of a new Jurassic era,” it retains the Jurassic World rebranding that was ushered in along with the 2015 franchise-revival blockbuster of the same name, which starred Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard.Credit: Inside the MagicNow, a new film is reportedly in development, one that’s expected to continue with the characters introduced in Rebirth. But even if Johansson and her co-stars don’t return for another outing, future films including the next one are unlikely to drop the World banner. The Jurassic World rebranding has proved hugely successful. So far, we’ve had four films, which have collectively grossed $4.85B worldwide, along with animated shows, theme park attractions, merchandise, video games, virtual reality experiences, exhibitions, and more.Sadly, this means the Park side of the franchise is unlikely to return to theaters. It can’t be ruled out entirely, of course, as we might get a spinoff or a prequel someday that reintroduces the film series’ original banner. But for now, it will at least continue in other media, with one installment already confirmed and now officially in development.Jurassic Park: SurvivalCredit: Universal City Studios LLC and Amblin Entertainment / Saber InteractiveJurassic Park: Survival is an upcoming third-person action-adventure video game from developers Saber Interactive.Players will assume the role of Dr. Maya Joshi (voiced by and performed in motion capture by Payal Mistry), an InGen scientist left behind on Isla Nublar, in a story that takes place just 24 hours after the original 1993 film. The game offers “a fully realized Isla Nublar” complete with familiar locations like the Visitor Center and the iconic park gates, as well as never-before-seen areas like a resort hotel that was in mid-construction, dinosaur enclosures, the jungle, and beyond. There’s no release date for the game, but there is an official trailer and a behind-the-scenes featurette that showcases everything from gameplay mechanics to in-game dinosaur models.Survival represents the first major return to the Park era since Jurassic Park III (2001).Animated TV ShowsCredit: Universal Pictures / DreamWorks Animation / Amblin Entertainment / NetflixThe Jurassic World saga isn’t just five films deep already — it also has two animated television shows under its belt, too — Netflix’s Camp Cretaceous and Chaos Theory. The two shows span the Jurassic World trilogy, with Camp Cretaceous starting just before the dinosaur breakout seen in the 2015 film and Chaos Theory concluding after the events of 2022’s Dominion. While neither series ventured into Jurassic Park trilogy territory, they did prove that future stories can continue to take place between films. As such, a new animated series could further explore the Park era, whether it takes place between films, before the original 1993 film, or even directly after 2001’s Jurassic Park III.Related: ‘Jurassic Park’ Officially Hitting Reset After ‘Rebirth’ Ruins Film SeriesJurassic Park Tie-In NovelsCredit: Universal PicturesJurassic is no stranger to tie-in novels, either, which isn’t surprising given the fact the franchise started life as a best-selling novel from Michael Crichton.Looking specifically at the Park trilogy and not World (which also has its own novel spinoffs), Jurassic Park III got three official follow-ups in the form of novellas by author Scott Ciencin: Survivor, Prey, and Flyers, which form the Jurassic Park Adventures series. While Jurassic books have most recently tied into the World trilogy (The Evolution of Claire and Maisie Lockwood Adventures), here’s hoping we get more Park-centric entries in print.Jurassic Theme Park AttractionsCredit: UniversalThe Jurassic Park side of the franchise also lives on in real theme park attractions at Universal Studios destinations worldwide. While certain installations have also been rebranded to reflect the World aesthetic (such as Hollywood’s Jurassic Park: The Ride becoming Jurassic World: The Ride), Jurassic Park River Adventure at Orlando, for instance, remains fully operational. Here’s hoping that the franchise’s new identity doesn’t continue to consume the old one in the theme park setting like it has on the big screen and in other corners of entertainment.Jurassic Park Comic BooksCredit: Universal PicturesJurassic has a reasonable collection of comics under its belt, but compared to other franchises like Marvel, DC, and Star Wars, and almost any other major IP you can think of, it’s surprisingly lacking. The first Jurassic Park comics fell under Topps Comics, starting in 1993 following the release of Steven Spielberg’s blockbuster. The Lost World: Jurassic Park (1997) also received tie-in comics from the publisher, but they were to be the last of the Topps run.IDW Publishing started Jurassic Park comics in 2010; however, despite announcing a series based on the Jurassic World films, that never happened and no reason was ever given. Will the Park comics return under IDW or another publisher? In an age where comics have seen a resurgence, it’s hard to imagine the world of Jurassic never going into animated print again, and it would be a great way to explore many untapped areas of the Park timeline.Credit: Universal City Studios LLC and Amblin Entertainment / Saber InteractiveFor now, we’ll just have to wait and see if Jurassic Park: Survival is successful enough to inspire a new wave of content based around the original era.Meanwhile, Jurassic World Rebirth is now available to watch at home. It stars Scarlett Johansson (Avengers: Endgame), Jonathan Bailey (Bridgerton), Manuel Garcia-Rulfo (The Lincoln Lawyer), Rupert Friend (Obi-Wan Kenobi), Mahershala Ali (Green Book), Luna Blaise (Manifest), David Iacono (Dead Boy Detectives), Audrina Miranda (Lopez vs Lopez), Philippine Velge (Station Eleven), Bechir Sylvain (BMF), and Ed Skrein (Deadpool).Would you like to see Jurassic Park, as opposed to Jurassic World, return to theaters, or are you happy that it’s at least continuing in other media?
