Light magnitude 3.9 earthquake at unknown depth4 Mar 00:24 UTC: First to report: VolcanoDiscovery after 2 minutes.4 Mar 00:25: Now using data updates from GFZUpdate Wed, 4 Mar 2026, 00:33Magnitude 3.9 earthquake strikes near Sibenik, Town of Šibenik, Sibenik-Knin County, CroatiaA shallow magnitude 3.9 earthquake was reported early morning near Sibenik, Town of Šibenik, Sibenik-Knin County, Croatia.According to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), the quake hit on Wednesday, March 4th, 2026, at 1:23 am local time at a shallow depth of 10. km. Shallow earthquakes are felt more strongly than deeper ones as they are closer to the surface. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by The Seismological Survey of Serbia (SSS), which listed it as a magnitude 3.9 earthquake as well. A third agency, the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, reported the same quake at magnitude 3.9.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Siverić (pop. 500) located 1 km from the epicenter, Drnis (pop. 2,800) 5 km away, and Knin (pop. 8,300) 17 km away.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Bilice (pop. 2,500) located 28 km from the epicenter, Sibenik (pop. 31,100) 30 km away, Vodice (pop. 6,600) 36 km away, Sinj (pop. 10,800) 41 km away, Solin (pop. 21,000) 45 km away, and Split (pop. 149,800) 46 km away.If you were or still are in this area during the quake help others with your feedback and report it here.Download the Volcanoes & Earthquakes app and get one of the fastest seismic alerts online: Android | iOSI didn't feel itI felt this quakeEarthquake detailsDate & timeMar 4, 2026 00:23:16 UTC - Local time at epicenterWednesday, Mar 4, 2026, at 01:23 am (GMT +1)StatusconfirmedMagnitude3.9Depth10 kmEpicenter latitude / longitude43.888°N / 16.202°EGrad Drnis, Sibenik-Knin County, CroatiaAlso near: Bosnia and Herzegovina 24 km (15 mi) awaySeismic antipode43.888°S / 163.798°WQuality37 seismic stationsShaking intensityIV Light shaking near epicenterFelt18 reportsPrimary data sourceGFZ (German Research Centre for Geosciences)Weather at epicenter at time of quakeScattered Clouds 8.3°C (47 F), humidity: 97%, wind: 2 m/s (4 kts) from NNEEstimated seismic energy released4.5 x 1010 joules (12.4 megawatt hours, equivalent to 10.7 tons of TNT) | equivalent to ONE quake of magnitude 3.9 | about seismic energy13 minutes ago reported feltMar 4, 2026 00:23 GMT / Mar 4, 2026 01:23 am (GMT +1)Lat / Lng: 43.888 / 16.202: Northwestern Balkan RegionSource: GFZOther sources: RaspberryShake: 3.9 / 10 km, SSS: 3.9 / 5 kmDetail info | Read user reports | You felt it? - Report it!';storedMarkers.push(['quake-22771411',43.88800,16.20200,'13 minutes ago: Mag. 3.9, Northwestern Balkan Region',html,'quakes-5-24.png',18,18,9,9,124]); function mkRep(id,notFelt){var nFelt=notFelt||false;var src="https://www.volcanoesandearthquakes.com/app/earthquake-report.php?quakeId="+id;if(nFelt==true){src+="&notFelt=true";}window.open(src,"","status=0,toolbar=0,location=0,directories=0,menubar=0,resizable=1,scrollbars=1,height=400,width=350");} function locationHashChanged(e){-1!=e.oldURL.indexOf("#popupMap")&&closePopup()} window.onhashchange = locationHashChanged; function comment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=(t.dataset.id,document.getElementById("commentForm"));"none"==a.style.display?(t.appendChild(a),a.style.display="block"):a.style.display="none"}function sendComment(e){var t=e.parentNode,a=t.parentNode.dataset.id,n=document.getElementById("commentContent"),p=n.value.trim();if(p){var o="id="+a+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId;o+="&comment="+decodeURIComponent(p),mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",o,function(e){e.responseText;alert("Thank you for submitting your comment!"),t.style.display="none",n.value=""})}}function flagReport(e){var t=e.parentNode.dataset.id;if(confirm("Report this as inappropriate?")){var a="id="+t+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&flagAsInappropriate=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",a,function(t){var a=t.responseText;alert(a),e.style.display="none"})}}function likeReport(e){var t="id="+e.parentNode.dataset.id+"&quakeId="+thisQuakeId+"&like=1";mkRequest("//reports.volcanodiscovery.com/app/eqReportComment.php","post",t,function(t){t.responseText;e.style.opacity=.5})}]]>[smaller] [bigger]Most recent quakes Top 20 past 24 hrs Quakes in CroatiaNearby placesThe closest larger town where the quake might have been felt is Split, a city with more than 150,000 inhabitants in Croatia, in 46 km (29 mi) distance southeast of the epicenter. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt180–80 km (49–49 mi)80 km (49 mi)II: Very weak shaking528–215 km (17.6–134 mi)79 km (49 mi)III: Weak shaking638–89 km (23–55 mi)52 km (32 mi)IV: Light shaking25.7–30 km (3.6–18.7 mi)17.9 km (11 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (19 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report!
