Six US service members have been killed in the ongoing conflict with Iran, and three American fighter jets were mistakenly shot down by an allied country. According to Axios, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth addressed the losses during a Monday briefing, echoing the president’s warning about further casualties. “As the president warned, an effort of this scope will include casualties,” Hegseth said. Hegseth had earlier described Operation Epic Fury as the most lethal strike in history, praising Trump for taking action against Iran. All six aircrew members ejected safely and are currently reported to be in stable condition. The incident reflects how chaotic the air situation has become over the region. American jets and allied air defense systems are operating in the same airspace at the same time, with Iranian missiles and drones incoming, making the risk of these kinds of mistakes extremely high. Missiles and drones have struck areas near Kuwait’s international airport and US military facilities in the country. With Kuwaiti forces actively defending their territory against incoming Iranian attacks, their air defenses were on high alert, which directly led to the accidental downing of the US jets flying through that same airspace. Hegseth has also been facing criticism on other fronts, with one senator accusing Hegseth of pushing an authoritarian AI agenda in a separate controversy back home.
