Wayne Rooney has told talkSPORT that he is hopeful serial winner Thomas Tuchel can take England to World Cup glory. The former Three Lions captain, who handed over the armband to Harry Kane, also insisted his successor remains the country’s main man for goals.Rooney told talkSPORT that Kane remains England’s main man if fitRooney, who also ceded the title as England’s record goalscorer to the Bayern Munich star, said there is little doubt that Kane, who has already reached triple figures in Germany, will lead the line. However, Rooney agreed that a tougher challenge for Tuchel, who has named Phil Foden as a No.9 option, is finding the right back-up.Ivan Toney has played just two minutes for England since Euro 2024, while the goals have also dried up for Ollie Watkins. The Aston Villa striker has scored just twice in 2026 so far, with his position at club level under threat by Tammy Abraham.“It’s a difficult one,” Rooney told talkSPORT at a Soccer Aid event where he will be once again taking part in the glitzy charity game. “It changes from early on in the season and still now to a certain extent.“People are talking about Welbeck, and [Dominic] Calvert-Lewin has come into really good form as well. Ollie Watkins, for me, Ollie Watkins will be there.“And then you’ve got players just behind that, not behind Ollie Watkins, but from the number 10 position – that’s your creativity, that’s the players you’ve got to go and create chances for these forwards to try and score the goals.“But ultimately, if Harry’s fit, he’ll play, and he’s the main player still for England. “So, yes, I think probably Ollie Watkins is the one for me to go behind.”Ollie Watkins has struggled with fitness and form this seasonGettyBut Aston Villa striker has already proved an able deputy for Kane at a major tournamentGettyWill England win the World Cup?With the 2026 edition now just 100 days away, Rooney was also quizzed on whether The Three Lions can finally get over the line following several near-misses under previous manager Gareth Southgate.England have won nine of their 10 games in the Tuchel era, with their only defeat coming in a 3-1 friendly loss to Senegal last June.During World Cup qualification, the former Paris Saint-Germain and Chelsea boss masterminded a perfect campaign.England scored 22 goals and didn’t concede a single goal en route to north America, with Tuchel signing a new two-year deal last month. On the German being the missing piece, Rooney added: “I hope so! We hope so. I think firstly, Gareth’s done a great job in his time there and what he’s done. But I think England’s in a good place.Rooney is hopeful that Tuchel can take England over the lineGetty“Squad-wise, a lot of places to choose from.“And then adding Thomas Tuchel to that and his coaching staff, I think he’s a serial winner; he’s won many of the top trophies throughout his career. “So you hope he can bring that experience to England and take us that one step further.”Rooney himself will ironically be looking to take England one step further in Soccer Aid following a run of recent defeats. At Old Trafford, the 40-year-old scored the fastest goal in the event’s history after four minutes but ended up on the losing side last year.“I’ve not won yet, so hopefully I can put that right this year,” he added.Rooney is returning to play in Soccer Aid and told talkSPORT he is targeting a first winRooney continued to talkSPORT: “You want to win. And I think the other celebrities outside of football bring that competitiveness to it because they want to win. It’s a massive occasion for them. “And it’d be like me going and singing on stage in front of however many thousand people you want to do well.“For all of them, they want to win. So that brings that edge to it. The matchday, everyone’s a little bit anxious. And you’re nervous for it.“But then the build-up to that, it’s great fun. Everyone’s together and sharing different stories and having a good time.”
