/u/sand_snake on Someone in my town can’t afford a cat but wants one anyways for a friend (and it has to be a girl!)

Wait 5 sec.

Yeah no way this person can afford the expenses that come with having a cat. I agree with the person who said to volunteer at a shelter. You can literally volunteer to be a cat socializer and that means you just hang out with the cats. When I did it, you had to take one free class that was like an hour or two long. After that you’d sign up for shifts, shifts were two hours long and you had to do at least one a week but could sign up for as many as you wanted. We had a computer system that showed what cats were in need of a visit, so you’d choose whichever cat, check off that you were visiting it, then after write a few notes about how the cat was doing. Then onto the next cat. There were other free classes you could take and kinda work your way up the volunteer ladder. Those classes were also free. I took the class for visiting the hospital wing cats. I wanted to do more but then Covid happened and I’ve just never gotten back into it. But it’s a good suggestion for them, shelters are always looking for volunteers. ETA It’s also really rewarding. There was this 8 year old black cat named Duggan there that I was in LOVE with, he was so sweet. He would always crawl into my lap and lay there purring until he decided it was play time. I was so happy for him when he got adopted. Hope that guy is doing great.
