Puerto Rico In Prime Guineas Position

Wait 5 sec.

Puerto Rico (Wootton Bassett) is likely for the G1 2000 Guineas with Gstaad (Starspangledbanner) eyeing the French equivalent, according to trainer Aidan O'Brien. A start for Saturday's G3 Greenham Stakes third Albert Einstein (Wootton Bassett) is still undecided.Puerto Rico has won his last three starts, with tallies in the G2 Champagne Stakes, the G1 Prix Jean-Luc Lagardere and the G1 Criterium International.A winner of the G2 Coventry Stakes and the GI Breeders' Cup Juvenile Turf, Gstaad was also second in a trio of Group 1s: the Prix Morny, the National Stakes and the Dewhurst Stakes.“Puerto Rico is there [in the 2000 Guineas at Newmarket] at the moment and obviously Gstaad is there as well,” O'Brien said on Racing TV's Luck on Sunday programme. “It is very possible that Puerto Rico could go to the Guineas and Gstaad could go to France.“Puerto Rico has won his last two races in France and he is a pacey horse. Gstaad has run on lots of different tracks and is a very straightforward horse.“We're very happy with Puerto Rico. Last year he progressed with every run, we were very happy with the way he wintered and we're very happy with everything he's doing at the moment.”A winner of the G3 Marble Hill Stakes in 2025, talking horse Albert Einstein has yet to win in two starts at three. Sixth in the Gladness Stakes at the end of March, he improved to take third behind Alparslan (Dandy Man) in the Greenham.“We'll see how he comes out of it now and see what the lads want to do. We still believe that he's quick and we still believe if he goes back sprinting we're probably going to see the best of him. Obviously we'd have to supplement him for the Guineas and it will be close to the race, so we don't have to make our minds up too quickly.“We think the run will have done him good whatever way he goes – whether he goes back to a mile or goes back to six [furlongs]. If he's going to a mile he'll be supplemented for the Guineas and if he's going back to six he might go for the Sandy Lane [at Haydock] or something like that.“He's such a quick horse at home it keeps coming into our minds that he might be more comfortable sprinting, but we haven't given up on the mile yet.”Both Gstaad and Albert Einstein would need to be supplemented for £30,000 each to run in the 2000 Guineas on May 2.O'Brien also had an update on his leading 1000 Guineas hopes in Precise (Starspangledbanner) and G1 Prix Marcel Boussac victress Diamond Necklace (St Mark's Basilica). A setback delayed the former's preparation, but the G1 Fillies Mile/G1 Moyglare Stud Stakes winner is reportedly doing well.He said, “She's doing good – we were very happy with her last piece of work.“There's a bit of time to go and they could go the other way, but I would say at the moment it's looking like Precise could make Newmarket and if she does Diamond Necklace would go to France I think.”The post Puerto Rico In Prime Guineas Position appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
