Attached is an updated map showing the shaking felt (and reported) by this earthquake.Update Tue, 21 Apr 2026, 00:39Significant 5.2 quake hits near Tatkon, Hkamti District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar (Burma)An earthquake of magnitude 5.2 occurred early morning on Tuesday, April 21st, 2026, at 6:29 am local time near Tatkon, Hkamti District, Sagaing Region, Myanmar (Burma), as reported by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).According to preliminary data, the quake was located at an intermediate depth of 84. km. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report.A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.2 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.2.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Tatkon (pop. 41,700) located 50 km from the epicenter, Moreh (pop. 16,800) 52 km away, Tamu (pop. 43,700) 55 km away, Ukhrul (pop. 27,200) 57 km away, Thoubal (pop. 45,900) 59 km away, Keirao Bitra (pop. 24,900) 62 km away, and Kakching (pop. 32,100) 63 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt1277–277 km (172–172 mi)277 km (172 mi)II: Very weak shaking17168–655 km (105–407 mi)294 km (183 mi)III: Weak shaking26121–430 km (75–267 mi)282 km (175 mi)IV: Light shaking1855–336 km (34–209 mi)250 km (155 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (70 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 13 km2 (5 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 6 km (4 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Apr 21, 2026 06:59 am (Yangon)24 minutes ago - felt5.166 km0 km - This quakeSagaing Region, MyanmarMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 26 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 57 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 7 or higher: 0.02 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 62.5 years)Mag. 6 or higher: 0.1 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 10.5 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 1.24 quakes per yearMag. 4 or higher: 18 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 48 quakes per year (or 4 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 57 quakes per year (or 4.7 quakes per month)The area where this quake occurred has a very high level of seismic activity.
