The tremor was recorded in the evening on Monday, April 20th, 2026, at 9:22 pm local time, at an intermediate depth of 104.20 km below the surface. The event was filed by the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), the first seismological agency to report it.A second report was later issued by the citizen-seismograph network of RaspberryShake, which listed it as a magnitude 5.5 earthquake as well. A third agency, the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ), reported the same quake at magnitude 5.5.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Atuntaqui (pop. 17,500) located 5 km from the epicenter, Ibarra (pop. 221,100) 6 km away, Cotacachi (pop. 8,200) 11 km away, Otavalo (pop. 32,300) 15 km away, Pimampiro (pop. 7,400) 27 km away, Cayambe (pop. 26,600) 33 km away, Pomasqui (pop. 28,700) 54 km away, Quito (pop. 2,781,600) 74 km away, and Ipiales (pop. 77,700) 80 km away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)I: Not felt449–1,242 km (30–772 mi)594 km (369 mi)II: Very weak shaking311.2–308 km (6.9–191 mi)130 km (80 mi)III: Weak shaking1011.1–115 km (6.9–71 mi)69 km (43 mi)IV: Light shaking169–69 km (43–43 mi)69 km (43 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (18 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.Get the Android appI didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 9 km (5 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Apr 21, 2026 02:22 am (Universal Time)12 minutes ago - felt5.4119 km0 km - This quake12 km W of Ibarra, Provincia de Imbabura, EcuadorMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksPrevious quakes in the same area of this earthquakeStrongest in 4 yearsThe earthquake was the strongest to hit this part of  Ecuador in over 4 years.
