We didnt have our first until my husband was gainfully employed either...but then the 2nd was born at 26w with CP, 3rd is autistic, & a couple years before I was supposed to go back to work, I dropped dead of sudden cardiac arrest(low potassium)& was diagnosed with MS(cause of said low potassium). So our lives didnt quite go according to plan. We made the best of it, we are ok(&never needed assistance, just lived "lesser lives"), but it wasnt always easy!! So no, this isn't about how well you hedge, there is alot of "luck" & circumstance involved as well!!
