‘Donny Has Been Very Lucky For Us’: Amo Racing In Town For Goffs Breeze-Up Sale

Kia Joorabchian has outlined shopping plans for this week's Goffs Breeze-Up Sale, where he says the focus will be on securing colts that Freemason Lodge-based trainer Kevin Philippart de Foy can point towards Royal Ascot. The Amo Racing boss was a high-profile absentee from the Tattersalls Craven Breeze-Up Sale last week. Instead, he elected to make the trip to Ocala for the OBS breeze-up sale. His no-show at Tattersalls, where he spent over £3 million on seven horses last year, was keenly felt by a market that returned to 2024 levels. However, Joorabchian revealed that he plans on bolstering his two-year-old squad at the sale in Doncaster on Wednesday, where his buying team will be spearheaded by its regular bloodstock agent Alex Elliott. “It's funny, Goffs has been the luckiest place for me to shop at,” Joorabchian said. “Donny and Goffs in Ireland has been very lucky for us. Power Blue and Arizona Blaze were bought at Goffs and we got Graceful Thunder from their breeze-up sale a few years ago as well. Goffs does seem to produce speedier and earlier horses. I might have to make an appearance there. There's a good chance that I will show up.”Asked who would be buying on behalf of Amo Racing this week, he replied, “The same people. I will send my trainers up there and Alex will be there also. Those guys will all be there. I haven't changed anybody. My team hasn't changed at all for years, actually. It probably should have, but it hasn't!”The Philippart de Foy-trained Lover Girl (Gregorian) represented Amo Racing's breakthrough juvenile winner earlier this month when scoring comfortably over five furlongs at Wolverhampton. The powerful operation has yet to register another two-year-old winner, although a number of Robson Aguiar-trained juveniles have hit the frame. Joorabchian explained that, after extensive investment at the yearling sales in 2024 and 2025, his stables are nearing full capacity and the approach this week will be far from gung-ho. Instead, the buying team has been set a brief to hone in on a small number of colts to bring back to Freemason Lodge. He said, “We did some very, very heavy shopping at the yearling sales last year. We purchased more later-maturing horses and the plan was to have a much broader mix of early two-year-olds as well as back-end types. I think that's where we are right now. Last year, we went to the breeze-ups and we were looking to buy early two-year-olds, because we didn't have many of those. This year, we have a much more balanced group of horses. I don't know if they are good horses, but we have a very balanced number of early and later developing two-year-old types. We've got a better balance.”Along with Godolphin, who spent over £2 million, Amo Racing contributed to a record-breaking Craven Breeze-Up Sale at Tattersalls last year. Both outfits were missing from the buyers' sheet last week and, while Joorabchian acknowledges that he has enjoyed very little luck buying from the Craven, he said his absence from Park Paddocks this year was largely down to OBS taking priority. Joorabchian: revealed Irish Oaks winner You Got To Me is in foal to Persian Force | GoffsReflecting on the opening breeze-up sale on the European circuit, Joorabchian said, “As far as the Craven goes, we obviously didn't shop there because we were at OBS. But, we have also had some very bad luck shopping at the Craven. There are very good breeze-up people out there. Especially the Irish breeze-up boys, they are very good at what they do. But they have all struggled because the yearling market has been so strong. For them to buy the level of horse that they would like to buy and then breeze, it has been very difficult. The yearling market was so strong that the average horse that might be valued between 100 to 150 grand was making 400 and 500 thousand. That made it very difficult for the breeze-up guys to compete. But I think the guys at Donny do a great job because, the type of horse you get there, it's the speedy two-year-old that is ready to run and it will give you a lot of fun when you are waiting for the later-maturing types.”He added, “The main reason why we don't need to shop the breeze-up sales hard is because we have such a big number of stock and we shopped the yearling sales hard. We're sitting at full capacity. In fact, I'm probably in a position where I might need to find places to put horses! My idea for Freemason is to bolster the squad there with a couple of colts, and they will come out of Donny and Arqana. Those are the two sales that I have the most luck at.”Joorabchian concluded that he will be making a concerted effort to support his own stallions at the sales in the coming weeks, months and years. That includes first-season sire Persian Force, who is yet to register a winner, but has been paid the ultimate compliment by the fact that Irish Oaks winner and 4.8 million gns purchase You Got To Me (Nathaniel) has successfully been scanned in foal to the Tally-Ho Stud resident.Joorabchian said, “I really believe in Persian Force and I am supporting that market strongly. He's been unlucky in that he has had lots of horses who have finished second and third without having a winner. But, when you have a stallion who is getting lots of horses finishing second and third, it means he is getting runners and I don't think we've seen the best of them yet either. His good horses haven't come out yet. It's only April. I am going to support my own stallions, for sure. I think it's important that these guys know that, if they support me, I will support them. I am very big on King Of Steel and Arizona Blaze as well. But, to tell you how much I think of Persian Force, I have given him my best mares. People will think I am crazy, but I sent You Got To Me to Persian Force. She is in foal to him. The majority of mares are going to King Of Steel and Persian Force, and now Arizona will get some as well.”The post ‘Donny Has Been Very Lucky For Us’: Amo Racing In Town For Goffs Breeze-Up Sale appeared first on TDN | Thoroughbred Daily News | Horse Racing News, Results and Video | Thoroughbred Breeding and Auctions.
