This New Fan Has a Built-In White Noise Machine That’s Both Redundant and Surprisingly Pleasant

I leave a fan on all the time — not just for the airflow, but also mainly for the sound of it. As someone with ADHD, I sometimes have trouble sorting through stimuli. The slightest sounds or shifts of light can send my mind spinning, and silence can be suffocating. The right kind of background noise has been shown to help people like me filter out the chaos and better control our scattered brains.I’ve also personally tested more than 60 fans since I started reviewing them for Wirecutter in 2019. And yet, at no point have I ever thought that any of them needed more noise options. There are certainly some fans that sound bad or annoying. But the good ones just produce a windy hiss that I can ignore. So when I first heard about the Snooz Breez — a new room fan with a separate built-in white noise machine — I’ll admit, I raised an eyebrow. We had previously tested the company’s dedicated white noise machine, which uses a fan inside a special acoustic chamber, and my colleagues liked it well enough. The idea of taking that fan-in-a-box and then sticking it into an actual fan, though? That seemed a little redundant.Still, the Breez had piqued my curiosity. Maybe the company was on to something. It certainly didn’t hurt that the Breez was a nice-looking room fan, too. So I decided to call in this noisy little fan and see how it would stack up against the other new models I was testing.
