Pellegrino Matarazzo’s dream first season with Spanish club Real Sociedad reached new heights on Saturday.Matarazzo became the first American manager to win a trophy in a top-five European league as Real Sociedad outlasted Atletico Madrid 4-3 in penalty kicks to win the Copa Del Rey Final. The two teams were level 2-2 after regulation and extra time before Sociedad got the job done in penalties. Sociedad’s win also clinched them a spot into the 2026-27 UEFA Europa League. Ander Barrenetxea propelled Sociedad in front after just one minute, heading home Goncalo Guedes’ cross into the back of the net.Ademola Lookman equalized for Diego Simeone’s men 18 minutes later, making it 1-1. However, Real Sociedad would take a 2-1 lead into halftime as Mikel Oyarzabal’s penalty kick propelled the underdogs back in front. Cardoso would enter the match in the 78th minute and watch as his teammates pegged Real Sociedad back again only five minutes later. Thiago Almada and Julian Alvarez linked up with the Argentine forward tying things up to force extra time.After neither team could find a winning goal in extra time, Real Sociedad stepped up in the penalty shootout. Goalkeeper Unai Marrero denied Alexander Sorloth and Alvarez in the consecutive attempts while Luka Sucic, Aihen Munoz, and Pablo Marin all converted on their attempts in the final three rounds.It marked Real Sociedad’s first trophy lift since last winning the competition in 2020. Up next for Matarazzo’s squad is a midweek La Liga date with Getafe on Wednesday as they continue to fight for a top-six finish.
