Intrepido (Maximus Mischief), winner of last year's GI American Pharoah Stakes, worked four furlongs in :47.20 (2/97) at Santa Anita Sunday and will ship to Churchill Downs with connections hoping to gain a spot in the May 2 GI Kentucky Derby.“I didn't [expect that],” trainer Jeff Mullins said of the work, which was quicker than he had anticipated. “But we often get what we don't expect.”The colt currently sits 22nd on the qualifying Derby points leaderboard and will need two defections to make the field for the race.Asked if Intrepido would run in a different race at Churchill Downs if he didn't make the Derby, Mullins replied, “No.”Intrepido was second in the Feb. 7 GIII Robert B. Lewis Stakes and was most recently fourth in the Apr. 4 GI Santa Anita Derby.Expected Kentucky Derby starter Pavlovian (Pavel) worked six furlongs in 1:15.00 (1/2) at Santa Anita Sunday. The Doug O'Neill trainee won the Sunland Park Derby in February and was a narrowly beaten second in the Mar. 21 GII Louisiana Derby.Also on the Santa Anita work tab Sunday, GI Del Mar Futurity winner Brant (Gun Runner) worked five furlongs in 1:00.00 (2/33) for trainer Bob Baffert. This was the colt's second work since finishing fifth as the odds-on favorite in the Mar. 7 GII San Felipe Stakes.Baffert also sent Forced Entry (Charlatan) out to work Sunday. In her second work since being pulled up shortly after the start of the Apr. 4 GII Santa Anita Oaks, the filly worked five furlongs from the gate in 1:00.2 (3/33).
