Anthropic’s redesigned Claude Code desktop app lets you burn through tokens even faster

Wait 5 sec.

You’d think one major update to Claude Code would be enough for one day, but on Tuesday, Anthropic didn’t just launch routines for Claude Code but also a redesigned desktop experience for its coding agents — with a few small tweaks to the overall app, too.As Anthropic describes it, “The new app is built for how agentic coding actually feels now: many things in flight, and you in the orchestrator seat.”This means you can now see all the active and recent sessions more easily, putting the emphasis on managing agents as they work on multiple repos and across them. And for when you need to ask a question while the agent is working, you can now open a side chat that knows about the main context, but doesn’t redirect the agent while it is working (you can start those side chats with ⌘ + ; or Ctrl + ;).A terminal for ClaudeOne of the marquee features is something users of OpenAI’s Codex will be quite familiar with: the updated Claude app now, for the first time, features an integrated terminal. That’s something I know I’ve been missing as I move between the two coding agents — especially given that my Claude tokens seem to be running out at an ever-increasing clip.“The new app is built for how agentic coding actually feels now: many things in flight, and you in the orchestrator seat.”Also new is an improved diff viewer, which Anthropic says has been “rebuilt for performance on larger changesets.” Anthropic also added an in-app file editor for quick edits, as well as the ability to open HTML and PDF files in-app.One nice feature here is that you can rearrange all of the optional panes (Preview, Plan, Diff, Tasks, Terminal) and the main chat pane, as needed. Maybe you want to focus on the diffs for a while as you look at what the agent built, for example, and put the chat aside. OpenAI’s Codex app doesn’t let you move the panes around (the terminal is always at the bottom of the window, for example), but its diff view still has a few advantages over Claude Code’s. It can also take over most of the Codex window and, in addition, features several more options, including the ability to switch between unified diff and split views. Claude Code only offers a unified view.Like before, Claude Code is available to all paying Claude subscribers and to those who prefer to pay for à la carte tokens through the API. Faster and more reliable appEven if you’re not a Claude Code user, the app may look a bit unfamiliar after this latest update. Instead of the modal at the top that lets you switch between chat, Cowork, and Code, the switcher is now in the sidebar and only features three icons, not the word marks of the previous switcher. The team also says it rebuilt the app for “reliability and speed, and now streams responses as Claude generates them.” That’s definitely something you notice after spending a few minutes with the update.
