James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe is fully underway. The newly established franchise marks a reset for Warner Bros.’ superhero slate after a decade of the DC Extended Universe. The new DCU, which is also an interconnected franchise comprising movies and television shows, replaces the DCEU continuity that began with Man of Steel (2013) and ran through multiple releases before concluding with Aquaman and the Lost Kingdom (2023).Credit: DC / Warner Bros. What’s Next for the New DC Universe? That reset became official last year with Superman (2025), which was written and directed by Gunn himself. It introduced David Corenswet (Clark Kent/Kal-El/Superman) as the new Man of Steel, stepping into a role previously held by Henry Cavill (Clark Kent/Superman).The film also stars Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nicholas Hoult (Lex Luthor), and Edi Gathegi (Michael Holt/Mister Terrific). Superman (2025) grossed $618.7 million at the global box office and drew a generally positive response. The DCU slate continues later this year with Supergirl (June 26, 2026), starring Milly Alcock (Kara Zor-El/Supergirl), and Clayface (October 23, 2026), which stars Tom Rhys Harries as one of Gotham City’s lesser known villains (the actor playing the DCU’s Batman, however, who will appear in the film The Brave and the Bold, has yet to be revealed). Both upcoming theatrical releases will be followed next year by Man of Tomorrow (July 9, 2027), a direct sequel to Superman (2025) that will again feature David Corenswet and Nicholas Hoult.Watch the official trailer for Supergirl:Related: Zack Snyder Confirms That ‘Justice League’ Films Will Co-Exist With James Gunn’s DCUDCU in Streaming and BeyondAs for the streaming side of the DCU, that was underway before Superman (2025) hit theaters, with the animated series Creature Commandos (2024) and Peacemaker Season 2 (2025). Now, alongside its film and television rollout, the DCU is expanding into themed experiences.A new DCU attraction has opened at Warner Bros. Studio Tour Hollywood. Superman Experience: Defenders Unite draws directly from the aesthetic of Superman (2025), placing guests inside the Fortress of Solitude and among its cyborg inhabitants, the Automatons.A new teaser showcases the one-hour experience:David Corenswet Has Been Replaced as SupermanSuperman Experience: Defenders Unite, of course, includes appearances from the Man of Steel (in animated form), but notably without Corenswet’s voice. That stands in contrast to attractions tied to the likes of Marvel and Star Wars attractions at Disney Parks, which typically see original cast members return to play the characters from their respective films.Credit: DC / Warner Bros. However, Corenswet is set to reprise his role on screen in Supergirl and Man of Tomorrow. The new experience also gives fans their first look at the DCU’s version of Darkseid, who last appeared on screen in the unrelated film, Zack Snyder’s Justice League (2021). Animated depictions of Milly Alcock’s Supergirl and her pet dog, Krypto, also appear in the attraction.According to the official site for Superman Experience: Defenders Unite, the attraction invites guests to “join the world’s greatest Super Hero and soar into an adventure like never before” and “cross continents, all in hyper-realistic, fun, immersive motion.”While the DCU continues to take shape, the “Snyderverse”—the name given to Zack Snyder’s three DCEU films, Man of Steel (2013), Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice (2016), and Justice League (2021)—remains a strong point of fan interest, with many continuing to clamor for its return, be that in film, television, animation, or comics. What do you think of James Gunn’s DCU so far?
