Two of Malta and Gozo’s most popular beaches, Ramla tal-Mixquqa (Golden Bay) and Ramla l-Ħamra, will have strict new rules for smokers starting 1st January 2026.While smoking will be banned across most of the beaches, designated smoking areas will allow visitors to light up without disturbing others. These zones will be clearly marked with signs at the beach entrances, and bins will be provided to keep the sand clean.Enforcement will be taken seriously, with police, LESA wardens, ERA officials, the Environmental Health Directorate, and the Malta Tourism Authority all involved. Anyone caught breaking the rules faces a €150 fine, with no warnings issued.Minister for the Environment and Energy Miriam Dalli, explained that the initiative came out of discussions with children and aims to tackle the ongoing problem of cigarette butts littering the sand and seas, harming marine life and taking years to decompose.Meanwhile, Minister for Health and Active Ageing Jo Etienne Abela, highlighted the health and environmental benefits of the ban, saying it protects both people and Malta’s natural heritage.ERA CEO Kevin Mercieca added that the designated areas will help reduce waste and plastic pollution, safeguarding the delicate marine ecosystem. From next year, beachgoers can enjoy the sun, sand, and sea knowing these measures will keep Malta’s coasts cleaner and healthier, all while still accommodating smokers in specific zones. What do you make of this decision?•
