Liverpool’s record goalscorer, Ian Rush, has claimed the Mo Salah saga should be “over now” and expressed his sympathy with Alexander Isak. You would be hard-pressed to find anyone better placed to comment on Liverpool’s strikers than Rush, who scored 346 goals for the Reds in 660 matches. The legendary forward was in intensive care for 48 hours before Christmas with flu, but is now recovering well and has spoken to BBC Sport about Liverpool’s striking options.Ian Rush on Liverpool’s forwards• Isak playing “catch-up”: Compares Isak’s injury struggles to his own return from Juventus, citing a lack of pre-season.• Ekitike “the star”: The legend hails Hugo Ekitike as the current “standout”• Salah saga: Rush believes the drama is “over now” following Mo Salah’s apology for his infamous interviewWith Isak out until the spring with a broken ankle and fractured fibula, the 64-year-old commented that the Swede’s start to life reminds him of his own return to the Reds after a year in Italy.“His situation reminds me a bit of when I came back from Juventus to Liverpool,” Rush said.“I missed a bit of pre-season and was playing catch-up. I was in and out of the side and I was getting these stupid injuries. That’s what happens when you aren’t fully fit.“The ability is there with Alexander Isak, but he is getting these injuries which he maybe wouldn’t have if he had done a full pre-season.”In fairness, a pre-season wouldn’t have prevented his latest injury, which came about simply as a result of Micky van de Ven’s late challenge. As a result of Isak scoring just three goals so far and now facing two or three months on the sidelines, Ekitike has become “the star” up top.Ten goals and two assists in 16 appearances have led to him being labelled “the standout” by Rush, who added: “He is a fantastic player who is quick and can play in different positions.“Hugo Ekitike is the star so far. We need to keep him fit.”As we all know, Salah had to take a backseat before his exit for AFCON, which led to him saying he had been ‘thrown under a bus.’He has since apologised to his teammates, though, and Rush deems the matter finished.“The best thing I’ve heard since was Curtis Jones saying Mo [Salah] had apologised. It is over now,” he commented.“We need Salah if we are going to be successful in terms of winning games and trophies. It is good to see him scoring goals for Egypt, but now we want to have him back scoring for Liverpool.”The Egyptian scored the winner in both of Egpyt’s opening two games at the Africa Cup of Nations, earning himself a rest as they drew 0-0 in their final group game.It remains to be seen if Arne Slot can find a way to fit Ekitike, Isak and Salah into the Liverpool team.It is important, therefore, that they are all in the right frame of mind going forward to recognise that their impact may be better suited from the bench at times, particularly Salah as his career slowly draws to a close.
