Donald Trump only worships one thing: Donald Trump. Sure, he might claim to be Christian, but he doesn’t regularly attend church, clearly knows very little about the Bible, and obviously isn’t familiar with Christian philosophy and thinking. Plus, y’know, there’s the awkward fact that every day he violates each of the deadly sins. But for Trump’s MAGA Christian supporters, him play-acting Christianity appears to be good enough for them. Some choose to believe God is acting through him in a very mysterious way, but the more pragmatic are just happy that he promotes Christianity and don’t care that he isn’t personally religious. Hypocrisy? Maybe. But if you’re a MAGA Christian, you’re already eyeball-deep in a million other forms of hypocrisy, so what’s one more? That said, Marjorie Taylor Greene has had enough of pretending that Trump is a genuinely god-fearing man. In a bombshell interview with The New York Times just days before she leaves Washington, Greene said one of the final straws was seeing Trump’s reaction to the death of Charlie Kirk. She said she was touched by Erika Kirk speaking at the televised memorial service and explaining she’d forgiven her husband’s killer. Then Trump took to the stage to give a very different message: “He was a missionary with a noble spirit and a great, great purpose. He did not hate his opponents. He wanted the best for them. That’s where I disagreed with Charlie. I hate my opponent, and I don’t want the best for them.” “It just shows where his heart is.” Greene was horrified that Trump would speak like this at a Christian memorial service: “That was absolutely the worst statement. It just shows where his heart is. And that’s the difference, with her having a sincere Christian faith, and proves that he does not have any faith.” This was a breaking point for Greene, who went on to explain that she finally realized that her Christianity was incompatible with Trump’s hate: “As a Christian, I don’t believe in doing that. I agree with Erika Kirk, who did the hardest thing possible and said it out loud. … I realized that I’m part of this toxic culture. I really started looking at my faith. I wanted to be more like Christ.” Say what you will about Greene (believe me, we have!), but it’s increasingly difficult to deny she doesn’t put her money where her mouth is. She has now torched her political career and is leaving Washington because she can’t stand the hypocrisy – it would have been incredibly easy for her to swallow her pride and become a good little obedient MAGA drone. Even so, with an aging Trump with a bevvy of health conditions, I suspect she won’t be out of the political limelight for long.
