Further investigation is in progress, said officers.In a tragic incident on New Year, an 18-year-old girl in Uttar Pradesh’s Banda allegedly killed her neighbour in self-defence after he attempted to sexually assault her, police said.The incident occurred when the man, a 45-year-old farmer, allegedly entered the girl’s house in an inebriated state and tried to assault her. She was alone at home at the time. The girl allegedly attacked him with an axe, leading to his death.Police said the girl later reached a nearby police outpost and surrendered. Acting on the information, police rushed to the spot and recovered the body; it was taken into custody for further legal proceedings. The girl was arrested.Superintendent of Police, Banda, Palash Agarwal, said evidence collected so far indicates that it was an act of self-defence. He said the police would place all available evidence before the court, which would take a decision in the matter.During preliminary inquiry, police found that the farmer frequently visited the girl’s house to meet her mother. On Thursday afternoon, he reportedly came to the house on the pretext of some work and waited there as her mother had gone to the fields. Police said the man was heavily intoxicated at the time.According to the inquiry, the man shut the door and allegedly attempted to sexually assault the girl. She first tried to flee the house but failed to escape. In an attempt to protect herself, she picked up an axe and allegedly struck the man multiple times.Police said she later used a stick to hit him after he fell unconscious to the ground.Story continues below this adPolice said the girl lives with her mother and her father died a few years ago. Police said she discontinued her studies after completing intermediate education.Based on a complaint filed by the deceased man’s wife, police have registered a case of murder against the girl.Police officers said she would be produced in court on Friday.
