Equity markets opened the new year on a mixed note, with benchmarks showing modest gains, but sectoral trends remained uneven. The BSE Sensex closed at 85,188.60, down 32 points or 0.04 per cent, while the NSE Nifty 50 ended at 26,146.55, up 16.95 points or 0.06 per cent.
