Arne Slot explains why he thinks Liverpool were better last season

Arne Slot believes patience is required when it comes to Liverpool’s new signings fully gelling with their Reds teammates. It was a big-spending summer at Anfield, with Florian Wirtz and Alexander Isak becoming the two most expensive signings in the club’s history.Despite this, Liverpool have underwhelmed this season, with new faces not yet having the desired impact, barring Hugo Ekitike.Speaking ahead of the Reds’ match against Leeds, Slot explained why patience is needed at the moment, especially with certain players injured.“I think if you bring in a lot of new players and a lot of players are gone, usually you see them playing better football after they’ve been together a bit longer,” Slot said.“There’s more training time, there’s more playing time together.“I think you could see this last season because that team was all the same with Jurgen (Klopp) the year before.“Especially the first half of the season, I thought we played some very good football.“That’s helpful if players are together longer and I think history has shown many times the longer players are playing together, the bigger chance you have of winning something.“If you add players to what you have, there’s also a serious chance of improving. If you replace, like we’ve done, then it takes time, and then usually it gets better after a certain period of time.“Unfortunately, we won’t see Giovanni Leoni this season and Alex (Isak) is going to take a long time before we see him again.“You can do the numbers of how much that is, and if you combine that with how much we’ve sold, that’s maybe an interesting story to make.”Some may baulk at Slot’s claims, given the huge money spent, and there is a middle ground when it comes to his comments.New signings can clearly take time to bed in, but given the players signed and the fact that Liverpool are champions, the dropoff has been unacceptable. That said, having both Leoni and Isak out for a long period is bad luck and a fair excuse, while Jeremie Frimpong has also been in and out of the team.Liverpool should only get better as time passes, as the likes Wirtz and Isak settle, but improvements are still needed right now.The Reds are unbeaten in seven games, but too many displays are unconvincing, especially when it comes to set-pieces.But on the plus side, Frimpong and Milos Kerkez have performed better of late, while Wirtz has arguably been the standout player for Liverpool in recent weeks.
