Tens of thousands of people from across the globe converged on Fort Kochi to witness the ceremonial burning of the Pappanji, the giant effigy of an elderly person, ushering in the New Year.Revellers thronged Parade Ground and Veli Ground, where massive Pappanjis were set ablaze simultaneously for the first time in the history of the heritage beach town.The celebrations at Parade Ground were hosted by the Cochin Carnival Committee, which has been organising the event for decades, while the Gala De Fort Kochi, a local charity club, conducted the programme at Veli Ground.The district administration and the police had ensured comprehensive security arrangements, preventing any major untoward incident, in both venues. A thick security blanket was thrown across the area with nearly 1,200 police personnel on duty.
