Pune sees coldest year-end mornings since 2018, minimum temperature to hover around 10 degree Celsius on New Year

(PTI Photo)The last time Pune mornings were so cold at the end of the year was in 2018, when the minimum temperature was 6 degree Celsius on December 30 and 6.9 degree Celsius on December 31. On Tuesday (December 30), the Shivajinagar station of the India Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a minimum temperature of 9.9 degree C – lower than last year’s readings when the Shivajinagar station registered a minimum temperature of 17.6 degree Celsius on December 30.As 2025 comes to a close, the morning temperature varied across the city on Tuesday. In Pashan, the minimum temperature was 9.3 degree Celsius, while other areas too reported low temperatures, including Koregaon Park (13.9 degree Celsius), Lohegaon (13.4), Chinchwad (14.7) and Magarpatta (15.8).According to the IMD forecast, the minimum temperature in Pune is likely to be around 10 degree Celsius between December 31 and January 2. It is only on January 3 that the night-time temperature is expected to reach 11 degree Celsius. In comparison, the minimum temperature was 15.4 degree Celsius in Pune on the morning of December 31, 2024.Even the day time temperatures are lower this year-end compared to last year’s. While the maximum temperatures between December 28 and 31 in 2024, was above 31 degree Celsius, this year, the mercury has stayed below 30 degree Celsius. On December 29, Monday, the Shivajinagar station recorded a maximum temperature of 28.1 degree Celsius. In Pashan, it was 26.5 degree Celsius while in Koregaon Park it touched 30 degree Celsius.Northerly cold, dry winds prevailing“There are always year-to-year variations. This year, the northerly cold and dry winds are prevailing, resulting in temperatures being below normal compared to last year’s. Similar conditions existed in 2017 and 2018 as well,” says S D Sanap, scientist at IMD.The IMD has said that there will only be marginal variations in the maximum temperature in the coming days.
