Kyle Long takes the next step in a promising broadcast career as he watches former team the Kansas City Chiefs from the announcer’s booth on Sunday. The three-time Pro Bowler joined CBS Sports as an NFL analyst in 2020 before coming out of retirement to play one season with the Chiefs.CBSLong is a rising star on CBS Sports[/caption]Patrick Mahomes & Co take on the division rival Las Vegas Raiders in a Week 18 contest with only draft position at stake.Long will have a chance to cut his teeth in the booth in what could be Pete Carroll’s final game as a head coach. He earned almost $40 million on the field after joining the Chicago Bears in the first round of the 2013 draft as a highly-rated guard. The O-lineman was named as one of the 100 greatest Bears of all time and has enjoyed similar success behind the camera as the host of CBS’s new pregame show The NFL Today+, alongside Matt Ryan, Antonio Pierce, and host Amanda Guerra. Play-by-play announcer Chris Lewis and sideline reporter Tiffany Blackmon will join him for the game as Long looks to add another string to his bow.In a chat with Chiefs Wire’s Ed Easton Jr., Long hailed his former team for securing a postseason birth as NFC North champions.“I am not a fan of using the word ‘destiny’ in sports, but this feels like a team of destiny. It feels like a team that was dragged through the mud a little bit last year, and the way that it ended with (Matt) Eberflus right after drafting the number one pick, the performance, or lack thereof, however you want to look at it. I’m in the supportive of Caleb (Williams) camp,” he said Long.“All the eyes of the football world were on the Chicago Bears this year. You took the high. This coordinator in football, you made him a head coach, a guy who’s never led the meetings, by the way, it’s a significant distinction between being a coordinator and being a head coach. “So there was a lot to prove for Caleb Williams, and for Ryan Poles, the general manager.”Long sounded a word of warning after Jayden Daniels, who went one pick behind Caleb Williams, led the Washington Commanders to within a game of the Super Bowl as a rookie, only to endure a tough sophomore season.GettyLong went 20th overall to the Bears out of Oregon[/caption]GettyWilliams has improved as a sophomore after a dire rookie campaign[/caption]“There was a ton to prove for Caleb Williams, this whole group, and they’ve done it all year, and the way that they’ve done it all reminds me a lot of last year’s (Washington) Commanders football team, where 10 wins, all within one possession. There was no one-possession game that the Commanders lost,” he added.“I feel like it’s the flavor of the year for the Bears, but I think the Bears are a better team than the Commanders were last year. “If you remember, the Commanders went to the NFC Championship, dude, anything could happen. John Fox used to tell me, ‘You get your butt to the dance, and you dance your little butt off. The dance is the playoffs; if you can get in it, you can win it.”Long knows all about the lean times in Chicago in recent years and is delighted for the fans who used to roar his name.“I feel like every fan base deserves to understand and feel meaningful football,” he explained.“For a guy who’s watched teams and been on teams that people watch and say, ‘Why can’t our offense do what everybody else does?’ We changed the channel to that team, and they’re scoring points, with no pre-snap penalties. Well, you’re looking at it right now.NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?“So instead of having this conversation, I would say, make sure you are appreciating it, because we’ve got really good football in front of us right now. Time waits for nobody, and this will be gone before you know it. “If you look at the Commanders, we thought that they were on the cusp of another championship run this year, and you see how that thing goes. So appreciate it.
