A critical component is the development of coaching terminals and maintenance facilities, essential for sustaining higher suburban frequencies by improving rake availability, turnaround time, and operational flexibility.Four major coaching terminal projects are Panvel–Kalamboli, Kalyan, Parel, and LTT Terminal 2. These facilities will house pit lines, stabling lines, sick lines, platforms and shunting infrastructure to service suburban rakes closer to their operating corridors. Railway officials said additional services will be rolled out after these terminals are commissioned.“The new coaching terminals will significantly enhance our maintenance and stabling capacity, allowing rakes to be serviced and turned around faster. This is critical to introducing the planned 584 additional suburban services, while also reducing overcrowding and improving reliability for commuters,” said Dr Swapnil Nila, Chief Public Relations Officer, Central Railway. At Panvel–Kalamboli and Kalyan, work is underway to support additional services. Panvel–Kalamboli will feature five platforms at Panvel and four pit lines, two stabling lines, two sick lines, and two transfer lines at Kalamboli, strengthening maintenance on Harbour and trans-harbour sections. The Kalyan terminal will have six platforms, five pit lines, and two sick lines, with the goods yard being relocated to free space for suburban operations. At Parel and LTT Terminal 2, the focus is on expanding maintenance facilities and easing pressure on crowded terminals. Parel will be developed in two phases — Phase I with four platforms, one shunting neck, and two stabling lines, and Phase II adding two platforms, four stabling lines, four pit lines, two sick lines, and an additional shunting neck. The LTT Terminal 2, which has passed approval stages, will have four platforms, two pit lines, two stabling lines, two shunting necks supporting additional suburban services from eastern suburbs. The expansion is part of a larger capacity strategy including additional lines between Parel–Kurla and Kalyan–Kasara, segregation of suburban and mainline traffic, harbour line extension from Goregaon to Borivli, platform extensions for 15-car trains, and the Naigaon–Juichandra double chord line.Story continues below this adOn Western Railway, new services will be introduced after completion of the sixth line till Borivli, with additional AC locals added as new rakes are commissioned.“With the completion of new coaching terminals and allied infrastructure, Western Railway will be able to segregate suburban and long-distance traffic more efficiently,” said Vineet Abhishek, CPRO, WR. Officials added that this upgrade is expected to allow 165 additional suburban services and more AC locals in the coming years.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:suburban Mumbai
