Completed in 2000, the current condition of the flyover is poor, with cracks and weakened expansion joints slowing traffic, officials said.To address a long-pending issue in West Delhi, the Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to decongest the Janakpuri’s Pankha Road crossing by building a flyover from DESU Colony to Janakpuri D-Block, officials said. The Janakpuri Pankha Road crossing is one of the busiest stretches and is a key route for people living in Janakpuri and surrounding areas. It is also a key road connecting West Delhi to New Delhi and Delhi Cantonment via Cariappa Marg.Officials said that a proposal has been prepared to appoint consultants to study the stretch, traffic congestion, and the number of vehicles using the road. The department has also approved a financial sanction of Rs 2 crore for the consultancy. Officials, meanwhile, said that the consultants will also study the routes and submit a report on whether a flyover or an underpass should be developed to address the congestion on the stretch.“The stretch is the lifeline for people living in and around this area as it provides connectivity to IGI Airport, Dwarka and Najafgarh on one side and Delhi Cantonment, Dhaula Kuan, Hari Nagar and Tilak Nagar on the other. Currently, the stretch sees massive traffic jams due to illegal encroachments and parking,” said a PWD official.Officials said that to avoid peak-hour jams on the main road, commuters often take colony roads, further congesting the junction points.A feasibility study will be carried out and a detailed project report has been ordered, officials said.Education Minister Ashish Sood has taken stock of the situation last year and directed officials to address the issues being faced by the residents.Story continues below this ad“Pankha Road, Jail Road and the stretch around Janakpuri have been neglected for the last 11 years by the previous government.
