(File)In the wake of increasing instances of theft and infrastructure damage, the Public Works Department (PWD) is planning to depute armed security guards at the Signature Bridge situated in North East Delhi, officials said.Under this plan, one guard, armed with a gun, will be appointed mostly during night when theft cases rise, officials said. Further, two guards without guns will also be deployed during the day, they said.Speaking about the move, a senior PWD official said, “We have observed several incidents of theft…thieves have cut the iron grills and damaged the infrastructure also. If our security guards try to question them, the miscreants usually attack them with a knife. Most of these thieves are dangerous….so, the PWD is planning to deploy one guard with a gun.”Officials said that they have floated a tender of Rs 1.5 crore under the annual maintenance head to deploy the security guards in eight-hour shifts.According to the requirements, the security guards must not be above the age of 55 and should have English and Hindi language speaking skills. This is not the first time the PWD is appointing armed security guards for vigilance. It has earlier deployed armedsecurity guards at Pragati Maidan corridor following similar incidents. The signature bridge is Delhi’s first asymmetrical bridge, opened in 2018. The stretch was constructed by the Tourism department. It has handed over the flyover to the PWD. The bridge connects Outer Ring Road with other areas in Wazirabad, Karawal Nagar, and Bhajanpura and provides connectivity to GT Road, Shahdara flyover, and further towards Ghaziabad and ITO.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:Delhi Public Works DepartmentNew Delhi
