Police ranks began the new year with a series of firearm seizures and arrests across several divisions, as they intensified operations aimed at removing illegal weapons from communities nationwide.In the North West District, police are investigating the discovery of two improvised firearms at Bamboo Landing, White Water Village, following a report received on Thursday, January 1, 2026, at about 07:30 hrs. Acting on information, ranks visited the area and retrieved one improvised firearm reportedly taken from a male involved in a family dispute. Further searches led to the discovery of a second improvised firearm at a nearby residence. Both weapons were lodged at the Mabaruma Police Station. A 33-year-old chainsaw operator of Bamboo Landing was arrested in connection with the discovery, while several other persons were questioned. Investigations are ongoing.Meanwhile, in Regional Police Division 4 ‘C’, multiple intelligence-led operations resulted in the seizure of suspected firearms and ammunition and the arrest of several individuals on the East Coast of Demerara and in Georgetown.At about 06:40 hrs on January 1, ranks conducted an operation at the Sparendaam/Plaisance Railway Embankment Area, East Coast Demerara, during which a 47-year-old Chief Security Officer of South Vryheid’s Lust was arrested. Police said the man was observed standing among several individuals and attempted to hurriedly leave the area upon noticing the ranks. He was intercepted and searched, during which a suspected 9mm Taurus pistol and a magazine containing five suspected 9mm rounds were found on his person. He was escorted to the Sparendaam Police Station, where he remains in custody as investigations continue.In a separate operation at the same location at about 06:30 hrs, police intercepted a motorcycle driven by a 38-year-old businessman of Republic Gardens, Georgetown. A search revealed a suspected .40 Smith & Wesson pistol tucked in his waist, along with a magazine containing one live suspected .40 round of ammunition. He was arrested and taken to the Sparendaam Police Station, where the firearm and ammunition were lodged pending investigations.Earlier that morning, at about 03:40 hrs, police conducted another intelligence-led operation at South Ruimveldt, Georgetown. During the operation, ranks on mobile patrol observed a motor car travelling along Durban Street. As police approached, the driver reportedly sped away, but the vehicle was intercepted at the intersection of Aubrey Barker and High Palm Roads. A search conducted in the presence of the lone occupant, a 26-year-old man of Lamaha Park, Georgetown, resulted in the discovery of a suspected 9mm pistol and a magazine containing three suspected 9mm rounds in the driver-side door. The suspect was arrested and escorted to the East La Penitence Police Station, where he remains in custody.All suspected firearms and ammunition seized during the various operations have been lodged at the respective police stations as investigations continue.
