Arne Slot has addressed Liverpool’s parting of ways with set-piece coach Aaron Briggs, but remained tight-lipped on any future replacement. No team had conceded more set-piece goals (excluding penalties) in Europe’s top five leagues than Liverpool’s 12 at the time Briggs was sacked earlier this week.He had taken on the position as set-piece coach over the summer having initially arrived at the club in 2024 as the new first-team individual development coach. The decision to part ways was made before the visit of Leeds, and the first opportunity the press had to ask Slot about it was following Thursday’s draw, and he was complimentary of Briggs.“First of all I want to thank him for the one-and-a-half years we worked together, because he’s been a part – and a big part – of us winning the league last season,” Slot said.“He’s been a big help to me. He’s a very good human being, a very promising, young English coach.“But as things sometimes happen, in January or in June, both go either way and that is what happened over here as well.“He will definitely find a new challenge for himself, because he’s done a good job with us.“He’s a very good human being, a very promising, young English coach, so he deserves to get multiple chances again.”Prior to Briggs filling the role and eventually taking on the job officially in September 2025, Liverpool had posted a job advert on the club’s official channels as well as LinkedIn.• READ: How Liverpool missed out on their No. 1 set-piece coach targetThe responsibility of Liverpool’s set pieces now falls upon the rest of Slot’s coaching staff, with Sipke Hulshoff notably the one on the touchline shouting instructions against Leeds. The inevitable question, however, is Liverpool’s plans for the role moving forward, though Slot remained tight-lipped over what comes next.“I think it would be a surprise to you, if I never talk about players we bring in, that I would start talking to you about names in terms of coaches we could bring in,” Slot said in reply to replacement talk.“Of course we are looking at the situation, what is best for us now, but as long as I have no news about that, I cannot share anything about it.”Briggs’ appointment came after Liverpool failed to land their priority target in Feyenoord’s Etienne Reijnen, who was at one point believed to be close to a move to Merseyside before work permit issues arose.
