Dallas Cowboys projected to lose major offensive weapon in free agency

Javonte Williams was one of the bright spots for the Dallas Cowboys in a largely forgettable 2025 campaign. The Cowboys signed Williams to a one-year, $3 million deal last offseason, and to say that he outperformed his contract would be an understatement. In 16 starts for Dallas on the season, the fifth-year back tallied 1,201 rushing yards, 137 receiving yards and 13 total touchdowns.Unfortunately for Dallas, Williams’ productive play means that he’s going to garner a lot of outside interest when he hits unrestricted free agency after the season, and the Cowboys might not be able, or willing, to pay him as much as some other teams, so they’re likely to lose their best rusher from the ’25 season.Alex Kay of Bleacher Report recently listed the New York Jets an ideal landing spot for Williams, as the Jets will likely need to replace potentially-departing starter Breece Hall.“Williams bet on himself and now gets to hit free agency at an ideal time,” Kay wrote. “Despite finishing the campaign on the sidelines with a shoulder injury, the 25-year-old is set to earn a significant raise in 2026. More Dallas Cowboys news: Dak Prescott explains why he wants to play in regular season finale for Cowboys“Don't expect a long-term deal from the Cowboys, however, as the team is projected to be nearly $37 million over the cap when the new league year begins. Dallas won't have the flexibility to issue a large contract to Williams, but plenty of other teams could.”In the same article, Kay mentioned Dallas as a potential destination for veteran back J.K. Dobbins, who could potentially serve as a replacement for Williams. Dobbins will likely command a less lengthy and less expensive deal than Williams on the open market, so his addition could potentially fit into Dallas’ budget.Of course, this is all hypothetical right now. We don’t truly know what’s going to happen with any of these guys over the offseason. However, it does seem likely that Williams will seek a heftier contract elsewhere after playing for Dallas at a bargain rate this season, so Cowboys fans should be prepared for that.
