Liverpool’s attack ‘tripping over each other’ – Michael Owen: “Don’t see many goalscorers”

Wait 5 sec.

Michael Owen hasn’t held back in his criticism of Liverpool’s lack of bite in attack, following the drab 0-0 draw with Leeds. The Reds produced one of their most lifeless performances of the season on New Year’s Day, hardly ever looking like breaking down the visitors.Away from Liverpool’s set-piece woes, the attack has also failed to fire too often, as proved to be the case against Leeds.• READ: Is Arne Slot’s “hard watching” football enough to keep him at Liverpool this summer?Speaking on Greatest Sport after the stalemate, Owen bemoaned the lack of creativity and goals in the Reds’ squad. “Well, sometimes it’s not only tactical – sometimes it’s just an attitude thing, an urgency, a desire,” Owen said.“I did think late on in the game they weren’t playing wide enough. Chiesa came on and he didn’t really know where he was standing.“Gakpo came on but so did Ngumoha, and they were tripping over each other themselves standing in the same position.“Conor Bradley, normally an attacking threat down the right side, I thought that was one of his worst games.“There was just no creativity. I said to Macca (Steve McManaman) before the game that I like the balance of Liverpool’s team, but I don’t really see many goalscorers.“Normally, you see a Salah and an Ekitike and an Isak and a Gakpo, and you think there are goals amongst those.“Look at that team today and Wirtz is struggling for goals and for performances, and you’ve got a right wing-back playing in place of Mo Salah at the moment.“It just shows you people saying Salah should have been dropped or sold – I mean, that’s them without Mo Salah!”Any team without Mohamed Salah and Alexander Isak is going to struggle, in terms of matching their quality, but Liverpool’s attack is a worry.Too often this season, the Reds have felt ponderous and predictable in the final third, with Hugo Ekitike the only reliable source of goals. Then there are Slot’s attacking substitutions, which have constantly felt like someone trying to fit square pegs into round holes. His late changes consistently give Liverpool no structure, as Owen rightly alludes to, with Federico Chiesa seemingly having no actual position at times! The hope is that the Reds go up a level when Salah and Isak return, but neither were exactly performing well before their respective current absences.Liverpool are a tough watch this season and the attacking approach is one of many reasons for that.
