It was hard to find positives after Liverpool drew 0-0 with Leeds at Anfield, but two supporters are split over Arne Slot‘s future. The Reds were so poor on New Year’s Day, rarely looking like finding a winner, as 2026 got off to a stuttering start. Here, This is Anfield’s Henry Jackson (@HenryJackson87) and artist Abigail Rudkin (@rudkin_abigail) dissect another unconvincing Liverpool performance and discuss what the future holds for Slot. The good…ABIGAIL: I thought we defended well throughout the game – Virgil and Konate looked pretty solid at the back.Frimpong looked really exciting. He was full of energy and great down that right-hand side, whipping in some good balls.Bradley worked really hard defensively, too. But that’s about it.HENRY It’s fair to say that the positives were minimal.I agree that Frimpong was the standout player – that one burst of pace in the first half was a sight to behold! – and his versatility is so useful without Mo around. But let’s face it, this wasn’t exactly some exceptional performance from him!Alisson kept his 100th Premier League clean sheet and Rio was lively off the bench, but I’m clutching at straws here. The bad…ABIGAIL: It was completely flat in the second half, once again. We’ve got quality in this squad that should be more than good enough to break down Leeds, but we seemed incapable of it.Ekitike’s headed opportunity was completely wasted when we needed to be clinical, which was beyond frustrating, and it summed up the day.HENRY What is it with Liverpool at the start of second halves? They are terrible after half-time so often. But the performance as a whole simply wasn’t good enough and the football was painfully dull. Jurgen’s heavy metal has never felt further away.I don’t think any individual was necessarily bad, but Wirtz frustrated me, being on the periphery after such a good display against Wolves. We need more from him consistently.Just a really flat start to the year and it’s hard to love this Liverpool team at the moment. Will Slot still be here in the summer?ABIGAIL: I’ll be the first to admit it’s hard watching right now.But ultimately, we haven’t lost in eight matches, and nine games ago, it felt like we couldn’t buy a win.So it feels somewhat unfair to say the way we win isn’t good enough when Slot’s task right now is really to stop what was some heavy bleeding. He won the league and I feel at the very least that should buy him the opportunity to get over the hill and fix the issues he has on his hands.HENRY I’m feeling less kind than Abi, unfortunately. I’ve lost faith at this point.I really like Slot and would love nothing more than for him to succeed, and he deserves enormous praise for winning the title when few expected it.But this feels like a Liverpool team that is going nowhere, much like the end of Rodgers’ reign, albeit not as bad as that.Slot’s style of play and tactics are baffling and he feels like someone whose own mind is scrambled. For weeks, results have been masking average performances and it felt a game like this had been coming. I dread Arsenal next week, to be honest.Unless there are huge improvements – maybe a long Champions League run – I think Slot will go at the end of the season. It will be sad, but on current evidence, deserved.
