‘Wake up, Mr. President’: Newsom rips into Trump’s nuclear testing. Then he reveals what’s wrong with the directive

Wait 5 sec.

California Governor Gavin Newsom went after President Donald Trump on Thursday over his plan to start testing nuclear weapons again. Speaking on NBC News‘ Meet the Press, Newsom said Trump’s move shows weakness pretending to be strength and called it typical behavior from the president. Trump said on Wednesday that he told the Defense Department to begin testing nuclear weapons right away. He made this announcement while traveling in Asia, right before he was set to meet with Chinese President Xi Jinping in South Korea. America stopped testing nuclear weapons back in 1992. Newsom had strong words for Trump’s decision. “Wake up, Mr. President. I know he may have jet lag. It’s the Department of Energy. He doesn’t even know which agency is responsible for that,” Newsom told the show. The governor said Trump got it wrong about which part of the government should do this work. People who study these things say the Department of Energy handles nuclear explosive tests, while the Defense Department only tests the missiles that carry nuclear weapons. Trump’s plan has people worried about what comes next Trump wrote on Truth Social that America has more nuclear weapons than anyone else and said he built them up during his first time as president. He added that Russia comes in second place and China is far behind in third, but China will catch up in about five years. A lot of people were surprised by Trump’s announcement, even some who work for him. Vice Admiral Richard Correll was at a Senate hearing on Thursday to potentially become the head of US Strategic Command. When asked about Trump’s post, he said he was not making any assumptions about what it meant. This made it clear that Trump did not tell many people about his plan before posting it online. Hans Kristensen works at the Federation of American Scientists and said that testing would be dangerous and could not happen for at least a year and a half. He said Congress would need to give the okay and pay for it. Another report from August said it would take two to three years to actually test a nuclear weapon after the president orders it. China’s government asked America to keep its promise not to test nuclear weapons. The head of the United Nations also said testing should never happen. A spokesman for Russia said his country would do the same thing if America starts testing again. He blamed Trump for making things more expensive for regular people. The governor said families will pay more money for toys this Christmas because of what Trump has done.  Even though Trump announced plans to test nuclear weapons, he later said he wants to work toward getting rid of nuclear weapons and calming things down. Former Vice President Kamala Harris has talked about foreign policy issues lately, but she has not said anything about this nuclear testing plan yet.
