Hopefully, every adult can name the worst first date they have ever been on. All our stories are different because taste is ultimately subjective. It builds the mettle of a person — and through it, you can truly gather where your floor is and finally start looking up to find the partner of your dreams. But what is the objective worst first date of all time? We have a candidate. And it happened at a bank. In 2016, a woman in Massachusetts met someone from a dating site. There were probably already red flags she hasn’t mentioned since — but the way those apps go is you kind of have to ignore some odd things. Meeting someone online is awkward, so you at least assume things get more relaxed and settled when you finally spend time together. According to CNN, on the fateful day of their first date, Christopher Castillo asked her to pick him up from his parents’ house in Chepachet, Rhode Island. He reportedly came to the passenger seat of her Nissan Maxima with an open bottle of wine, sipping it as they made their way down the road — the first major red flag. Yet still, she persevered. Next thing she knew, he asked her to pull over near the Bristol County Savings Bank — which in itself isn’t strange. He got a ride; the least he could do was get some cash to pay for the date. Therein lay the rub. After he walked into the bank, it didn’t take long before he was running back to the car, sweaty and wearing sunglasses, having just stolen $1,000. Clearly, this wasn’t the type of bank robbery you’d see in a heist movie, and one could assume he did it in a twisted attempt to have something to pay for their date. As soon as he got back in the car, he barked at her to drive fast — and after panicking, she simply obliged. At this point, the woman was speeding down the road when a police car started chasing after them. Eventually, she decided to pull over and walk away from the car. The now wine-drunk Tinder date stayed behind and had to be arrested after a violent struggle. What made it worse was that Castillo was armed with a gun, meaning the situation could have gotten really ugly. The Bristol County District Attorney’s Office prosecuted him successfully and got him sentenced to three years behind bars for armed robbery, plus an additional two years for the violent struggle with police. The Tinder Swindler has seemingly finally met his match. The woman, for all her struggles, was ultimately spared by the prosecutors. The objective worst first date in the history of dating apps was enough for her. Hopefully, upon his release, Castillo tries to find love another way — something that doesn’t start with Bonnie & Clyde activities. So if you still haven’t found the love of your life and are just heading home from yet another horrendous date, just remember — it truly could have been worse. It could have been a date with Castillo.
