Travis Hunter trade decision defended as ‘chance to win’ despite Cleveland Browns apparent early victory lap and IR news

Wait 5 sec.

The Jacksonville Jaguars’ new regime didn’t wait long to make an impact with a seismic trade for Travis Hunter.General manager James Gladstone gave up the No. 5 and No. 36 picks, as well as a first-rounder in 2026, to jump up three spots in April’s NFL Draft. The Jaguars paid a high price to bring Hunter to FloridaThe Cleveland Browns selected defensive tackle Mason Graham and running back Quinshon Judkins, while holding two first-round selections next year that could well be invested in the quarterback position with the way things are going. The Jaguars have placed Hunter on injured reserve, but that shouldn’t shift their big-picture plans.talkSPORT asked ESPN NFL Insider Dan Graziano who won the trade, and he admitted that the 1-5 Browns appear to have the edge at first glance, although the Jags are taking a long-term view with Hunter.“When you you list it out, it seems like Cleveland got the better end of the deal, especially with two first-round picks next year,” he said. “Now, you look at the team’s records and it doesn’t look like that. “But Travis Hunter is a young player that the Jaguars traded up to get because they thought he was effectively going to change the math for them and be something like two players, or one and three quarter players. So they feel like they can use him on defense, use him on offense, but a very young player and a very raw player.“From an NFL standpoint, you see what he can do when he gets the ball in his hands. You see what he can do on the field, the catches he makes, those kinds of things.“He needs to develop as a cornerback. He needs to develop as an NFL wide receiver. And the Jaguars know this and they’re finding ways to do that week to week. “They’ve been able to win in the meantime without getting a major impact from the second overall pick in the draft. But, if he continues to ascend, if he continues to learn what they need him to learn and they are able to use him as that versatile piece, ‘Hey, this week we need more help at cornerback. So we’re going to use you more on that side of the ball.’ Then they have something.”Graham has starred in a formidable Browns defense, while Judkins looks a prototypical back.Hunter’s start has been more modest, but the NFL hasn’t had a prospect like him in the modern era and it is clear the Jags are still working out how to use him.“I think they knew it was sort of an unprecedented situation. And by virtue of that, some level of risk,” added Graziano. “But it was one they were willing to take for the talent. And I think it’s too early to really pass judgment on that fully.GettyJudkins is a bruising runner and looks worthy of a second-round pick[/caption]GettyGraham has joined Myles Garrett on a stacked D-line[/caption]“I mean, I asked him, I went down and interviewed him and I asked, ‘What is your week like? What what meetings do you go to?’ It’s all very complicated in terms of how he manages throughout the week and throughout the game. And I think they’re all sort of learning and figuring it out together.”The Jags faced the Los Angeles Rams in London on Sunday, looking to continue a strong start under new head coach Liam Coen — a Sean McVay disciple. But it was a miserable game in the rain as Matthew Stafford’s five scores inspired a 35-7 triumph. The one positive was Hunter’s first NFL touchdown — a 34-yard grab in the fourth quarter. He finished with eight catches for 101 yards and also got the chance to line up opposite future Hall of Famer Davante Adams on defense. Adams had a hat-trick, but none of the scores came with Hunter on his tail.“I ain’t worried about the stats,” Hunter said afterwards.“We got to do better on the football field. We got to come out and we just got to win. That’s what I’m most focused on, just doing my job and having the other guys do their job, and we come out on top.“I told coach [Liam Coen] to get me the ball, I’ll go out there and make a play,” Hunter said. “He got me the ball, and I did what I had to do.”Hunter scored his first TD of the season but it was meaningless in the context of the blowout lossGettyLiam Coen admitted the loss was on himGetty“It’s on me,” Coen said afterwards.“You wouldn’t have guessed that we were here for a week prepared, ready to go play in this atmosphere by looking at it in terms of the way we started the game.”“It’s not like we didn’t have a good plan or anything like that,” Lawrence added. “Some self-inflicted wounds. If we can clean that up and just stay on schedule, we have to make those corrections and do it, but I think that’s where you are seeing the slow starts and then we’re getting behind.“Against a good team like L.A., when you get down 14 points right away because you start slow and have some three-and-outs, it’s tough sledding from there. We have to find a way to get back to starting the game faster, on schedule, and just play ball.”How long is Travis Hunter out for?Coen announced Friday that the two-way player will be placed on injured reserve after sustaining a non-contact knee injury during Thursday’s practice.“We’re currently assessing the injury just to determine the best course of action moving forward for Travis and the team,” Coen said.Through seven games, he posted 28 receptions for 298 yards and a touchdown, along with three pass breakups and 15 tackles on defense.“You just feel bad for the guy, for the kid, for our team, for everything. But he’s in good spirits right now. Minor setback for a major comeback. That’s just the way it’s gotta be,” Coen continuedHunter will be out for a minimum of four games.Shad Khan’s exclusive talkSPORT interviewOwner Shahid Khan sat down with talkSPORT ahead of the game, and revealed the decision making behind the seismic draft move.“If you look at the Jags over the last few years, statistically and otherwise, I think, you know, we’ve done very well with the draft,” he told Will Gavin. “The values, we always had a lot of picks, but let’s be honest, what do we have to show for those picks? The impact players. NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?“So, and this was really a very very compelling uh thing for me, that a year, two years, three years from now, we’re going to look back and we’re going to say we have Travis Hunter, who makes a difference.“The energy he brings and whether on defense or offense, it’s giving us a chance to win. So it was easy, but doesn’t mean it’s impulsive. We still went through the process and really, I’m so glad we did it.”Jacksonville eyes huge stadium upgradeWith franchise QB Trevor Lawrence leading a talented roster to 4-2, the Jags are looking like a team on the rise.In 2028, they will return to a gleaming new home with a $1.4 billion facelift transforming EverBank Stadium.“I think that the stadium will be Super Bowl ready,” Jaguars president Mark Lamping exclusively told talkSPORT.Khan would love that as much as anybody, but admits that there are obstacles.“Obviously, you design a new stadium, you do it to meet all the needs,” Khan said ahead of the Jags’ clash with the Rams.“But a Super Bowl now has really graduated to a event where it needs infrastructure besides the stadium, hotel rooms, infrastructure, and so on, and Jacksonville doesn’t have that.“It does have the ability to host other NFL events, maybe the draft, and maybe some other elements, but the city will have to develop before we can be in the mix, but it’s a covered stadium, it’s in Florida, a lot of attributes, but it doesn’t qualify.”Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for news, exclusive interviews and more.
