Michael Jordan talking basketball and the NBA back on NBC, surely a reason for hoops fans to rejoice. Not so, as one thing unifies critics of Jordan’s return to the spotlight with his NBC segment ‘Insights to Excellence’ role on NBC – in the main, that is that they want more.Jordan is back on TV screens, but some fans want more from the basketball legendGettyWhen NBC announced Jordan would be a ‘special contributor’ for its return to NBA coverage, as part of their 12-year, $27 billion TV deal with the league, many had no idea what to expect.Would fans get an in-studio appearance or even the occasional live analysis from the legendary six-time NBA champion? However, it seems that Jordan’s role on NBC will be limited to segmented versions of his one-to-one sit-down interview with Mike Tirico. So far ‘His Airness’ has divulged his desire to ‘pay if forward’ and held fans and former players rapt with his tail of shooting a free throw at an AirbnbAndrew Marchand from The Athletic has claimed NBC will “sprinkle clips” from this interview across the season as a result of Jordan’s reluctance to do much more, or at least have a schedule that would allow him to contribute on a more regular basis. It should be remembered that Jordan was not at NBC Sports’ presentation when they announced he would be joining the network.Nor was he in Oklahoma for the opening night of the NBA. While Jordan’s opinions are highly valued with his takes on load management and anecdotes proving popular with fans, it’s clear there is a desire for more. So far it’s been evident that Jordan’s appearance was clearly from one opportunity and former MLB executive David Samson believes that NBC have used a few simple tricks to at least create the illusion of more from MJ.“They didn’t change Jordan’s clothes,” he said on an episode of his podcast, Nothing Personal with David Samson. The NBA’s return on NBC after 23 years has been a success for the most partGettyAll of Michael Jordan’s appearances on NBC have been clips from off-site interviews@NBC“All they had to do was have a costume change, and then it would look like, oh, he sat down again. All you do is change clothes, put a green screen for a different background, and it looks like he sat down a second time, and no one’s saying a word.“The reason why people are so angry is they’re saying, wait a minute, he sat down one time.“NBC got him one time, and they’re just gonna chop it up to make it for 10 shows. I change my blazer when we’re doing something on a different day to make people think that it’s different. I think it’s funny.”Samson also took the opportunity to dismiss the idea that Jordan would ever travel to games or be some sort of heavily involved analyst.Claiming that the Chicago Bulls legend “doesn’t have the time.”Jordan’s return was highly anticipated after his legendary career in the NBAGETTY“Michael Jordan, when he signed a deal with NBC, is getting paid a lot of money,” Samson said. “And the thought was, what’s he going to do? And everyone said, ‘Oh, is he going to be a broadcaster?’ No chance. He’s not traveling to road games. “Is he going to be pregame, postgame like Jeter? No chance. Jordan would never do that. He’s not allocating the time. Doesn’t have the time, doesn’t need to.”Dan Patrick also weighed in on Jordan’s role on NBC, as he said on his show that while he thinks the 14-time All-Star and five-time MVP has only done one interview, he hopes that is not the case.“I think it’s just a one-time only, Mike Tirico visits Michael Jordan in Florida and they go over a variety of topics,” Patrick said.“I’m assuming that’s what this is going to be. I hope it’s not. I hope it’s timelier… I hope it’s not just a one and done.”To be fair to NBC, it’s only been two weeks, and there is a possibility that Tirico could visit Jordan more regularly to get fresh takes on the latest topics.Perhaps when the season approaches its climax, we may see Jordan appear on NBC in a live format or even in the studio. The season is long, but it would certainly be a disappointment should Jordan never react to current event topics or appear live on NBC.Stay up to date with the latest from the NFL across all platforms – follow our dedicated talkSPORT USA Facebook page and subscribe to our talkSPORT USA YouTube channel for all the offseason news, interviews and more.
