Drake Maye joins elite QB club  Patriots GOAT Tom Brady never made as Dave Portnoy slams ‘cheating’ refs

Wait 5 sec.

Drake Maye is one of the hottest quarterbacks in the NFL right now.The second-year signal caller out of UNC has once again showcased that he isn’t just the New England Patriots‘ star for the future, but a force to be reckoned with in the present.Drake Maye may be a top-5 quarterback in the NFL in his second seasonGettyIn the Patriots’ 25-19 road victory against Spencer Rattler and the New Orleans Saints, Maye exploded for 18-of-26 passes for 261 passing yards and three touchdowns, while he rushed for an additional 29 yards from nine carries. But it wasn’t just a polished performance by the 23-year-old, it was a historic one. This is because he also registered a passer rating of 140.1.This marked the fifth consecutive game that he had recorded at least 200 yards passing and a passer rating of 100 or higher, becoming just the fourth different quarterback in NFL history under the age of 24 to achieve such a feat. The only other players to do this are Patrick Mahomes, Dak Prescott, and Hall of Famer Dan Marino.Having got off to an impressive start to the 2025 season under new Patriots HC Mike Vrabel, Maye has been labeled by some as the second coming of Tom Brady, who is arguably the greatest NFL quarterback of all time. But not even Brady achieved the feat Maye has so early on in his career, having sat behind Drew Bledsoe early in his career.Through the first five games of the season, Foxborough’s latest star ranked second in the league in completion percentage, averaging 73.9 percent, and was fifth with 1,261 passing yards. His average passer rating of 107.8 was also the sixth-best in the league.Maye has Patriots fans excitedIn just six outings, Maye has already reached double-digit touchdowns on the season (10), and is on course to surpass 2024’s 15 touchdowns to seven interceptions, with him also having thrown just two picks on the year. With Maye looking every bit of a third overall draft pick, Barstool Sports founder Dave Portnoy couldn’t help but sing the praises of his quarterback on X: “Forget the refs cheating for a minute and let’s just appreciate the fact that Drake Maye is going to win a minimum of 4 Super Bowls.”Maye and the Patriots go 4-2 on the seasonGettyThe Barstool founder is all in on Drake Maye as the Patriots’ franchise quarterbackGetty“You have this guy No. 10. Drake Maye,” Portnoy added after the win. “I am watching football with joy, with pleasure.“You’re watching a Hall of Famer be born. Every play he makes, every decision he makes, superstar.“The throws he makes, all of it. When we need it the most, it’s honestly starting to feel like the old Patriots…“It is a great time to be a Patriots fan. I can’t be more excited. I already can’t wait for them to play next week…I’m telling you this team can already go to the Super Bowl.NFL's Greatest......Ranking the top 10......Quarterbacks of all-time – Can anyone better Tom Brady?Wide receivers of all-time – Does Randy Moss or Jerry Rice come out on top?Running backs of all-time – Stacking Jim Brown, Barry Sanders, Walter Payton, Emmitt Smith and moreTight ends of all-time – How does Travis Kelce compare?“There’s no juggernauts in the AFC. We’ve got the best player in the league. Best player, best quarterback in the league right now. Drake Maye – I’d take nobody over him.”Even prior to their victory over the Saints, Portnoy – a Patriots superfan – took to X for an ’emergency press conference’ following New England’s stunning victory over the Buffalo Bills, who were, at the time, the only undefeated team left in the league. There, he claimed that both Josh Allen‘s Bills, and Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs should be ‘worried’ about the AFC playoff picture, with Maye very much coming of age.But Portnoy isn’t the only one buying into the Maye hype.“Welcome back Tom Brady,” one fan wrote on X. “What an amazing performance by Maye. Super Bowl-bound Drake Maye” a second fan wrote. “Comparing Drake Maye to TB12 is literally making my heart flutter. THE AURA IS BACK IN NEW ENGLAND BABY,” a third gushed. “Drake Maye is gonna make me an insufferable fan again,”a fourth Pats fan admitted. The Patriots now jump to 4-2 on the season, but will have to wait to see the outcome of the Bills’ matchup against the Atlanta Falcons on Monday Night Football to see whether they will enter Week 7 leading the AFC East.
