Police have arrested two suspects, with one getting shot in the leg during an encounter.Police said the girl had gone to a market near her home Saturday afternoon, where she met a male friend. They then went to a nearby orchard and were talking when the five men arrived at the spot.According to the complaint lodged by the girl’s family, the men began questioning the girl and her friend about why they were together in the garden.“Within minutes, they allegedly started beating the girl’s friend and chased him away. After he fled, the five men dragged the girl to a secluded area and sexually assaulted her,” said a police officer. After returning home, the girl told her sister, who then informed the family. The girl’s father then registered a complaint.On Sunday, the police said they have arrested two suspects.One of them, Lalit Kashyap, 33, is undergoing treatment at a hospital after he was arrested in an encounter, police said, adding that his condition is stated to be stable.The other arrested suspect has been identified as Miraj, 23, said Nipun Agarwal, DCP, Lucknow.Story continues below this adAccording to police, the two men were spotted riding a motorcycle in the area. When the police signalled them to stop, they allegedly opened fire. The police returned fire, injuring Lalit Kashyap, while his associate, riding pillion, fled. An operation is underway to track down the escaped associate.
