Novak Djokovic apologised to fans at the Six Kings Slam after he was thrashed in straight sets by Jannik Sinner. The tennis icon missed out on a place in the final of the exhibition tournament in Saudi Arabia, losing 6-4, 6-2 to the World No.2. Djokovic has not beaten Sinner since the end of the 2023 season, losing all of their last eight meetings. And his latest heavy loss has led to him admitting that it was like playing against ‘a runaway train’.The 38-year-old also sent a humour-filled apology to the crowd in Riyadh for the game not lasting very long.“I’m sorry you couldn’t see a longer match today, it’s his fault, not my fault!” Djokovic laughed in his on-court interview.“I tried to intimidate him a little bit at that last game with the last 15 points, but it didn’t work.“Look, it felt like a runaway train, you know, he was smacking the ball from all corners.“I was just trying to hang in there, but he was just too good, so well done to him and good luck in the finals.”Djokovic will be back in action this weekend at the Six Kings Slam as he faces American Taylor Fritz in the third-place match. Meanwhile, Sinner will take on rival Carlos Alcaraz in the final. The two best tennis players in the world will meet yet again, playing for a whopping £4.5million prize in the Middle East.Djokovic was in fine form off the court after struggling against Sinner on itGettyWhat else did Djokovic say? Djokovic went on to speak about what it is like trying to compete against the likes of Sinner in the latter stages of his career.“It’s always worth it because the love for the game and the passion for tennis is there,” he said after his loss. “Excuse my language, but it’s never nice when somebody kicks your a** like this on the court. But it’s definitely amazing that I’m still being able to play at a high level, being top 10, top 5, it’s a good, good feeling.“I’m trying my best, you know, I have the body that I have, I’m grateful for everything that God has granted me in my life.“It’s been an incredible journey, an amazing career, there’s so much to celebrate, but I would like if somebody can trade a younger body with me, that would be nice, just for a year, so I can try to keep winning against these guys.“Jokes aside, I still have the drive, obviously I know that it’s becoming much more difficult for me to get a win against Jannik and Carlos particularly, but you know I’m going to still keep on challenging them and until it happens, let’s see.”Djokovic has admitted that he can’t compete as well as he used to against the bestGetty‘A real idol’ Sinner then spoke on-court and labelled Djokovic as his ‘idol’ after knocking the sporting legend out of the Six Kings Slam. The Italian said: “He’s such a great role model for especially us, the younger generation. “Seeing him competing, seeing him practice and training for these moments.“It’s amazing. What he has achieved in his career, it’s incredible and you know I see him as a real idol. “To play against him is such a huge honor and privilege.“I’m happy about today, but I’m also happy to see him around.”
