Sergio Garcia’s Ryder Cup hopes in tatters as $1m move goes to waste

Sergio Garcia is set to lose his DP World Tour membership just one year after he returned to the tour.The Spaniard made a surprise comeback in 2024 in a bid to make Luke Donald’s Ryder Cup team. However, Garcia has only played in two DP World Tour events so far this year.He is not expected to appear at any of the remaining tournaments on the calendar.As a result, his playing status will expire having not played in the required four events in a season.It will also remove any hopes the 45-year-old has of representing Team Europe at the 2027 Ryder Cup.In order to qualify for the team, players must be a DP World Tour member.Garcia re-joined the tour last year having left to sign with LIV Golf in 2022.Due to his defection to the Saudi-backed league, he was forced to pay fines upon his return to the DP World Tour.It is understood these financial penalties totalled more than $1million (£750,000).Garcia claimed two wins on LIV and finished third in their 2024 individual points list.However, he was unable to carry that success into 2025 across his two DP World Tour events.GettyThe former world number two paid over $1m in fines upon his return from LIV Golf[/caption]Garcia’s 2025 seasonThe former Masters champion made his return to the tour in July at the BMW International Open.Garcia missed the cut in Germany, though, ending the opening two rounds on three-over par.His second and final DP World Tour appearance of the year came at last weekend’s Open de Espana.Although he made the cut, Garcia finished tied-39th, 12 shots adrift of winner Marco Penge.He had been expected to appear at last month’s Irish Open before withdrawing from the event.Garcia pulled out after he was not included as a captain’s pick by Donald for the Ryder Cup.GettyGarcia is set to be ineligible for the 2027 Ryder Cup after playing just two DP World Tour events this year[/caption]Meanwhile, he now finds himself ineligible to be on Team Europe at Adare Manor in 2027.It would represent the third consecutive Ryder Cup in which Garcia has not featured, having previously appeared on 10 occasions in his career.
