CSIR-NGRI to set up two new research facilities

CSIR-National Geophysical Research Institute (CSIR-NGRI) director Prakash Kumar has announced the establishment of two state-of-the-art facilities — Laser Interferometer Seismological Observatory (LISO) and the Centre for Geothermal Energy Research (CGER) — which aim to strengthen the institute’s capabilities in frontier areas of earth science.During the recent 65th foundation day meeting, he claimed that of the 10 visionary goals outlined by the CSIR, two are being directly advanced by CSIR-NGRI, underscoring the institute’s strategic importance within India’s scientific network. He also commended the scientific team involved in the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel rescue operation.Former director V.P. Dimri, in his welcome address, traced the rich legacy of NGRI and highlighted major achievements in earthquake hazard assessment across the Himalayas, groundwater exploration, and mineral resource investigations. Another executive-director, Harsh Gupta, praised the first Encyclopaedia of Solid Earth Geophysics brought out by the institute and its pioneering studies on Himalayan earthquake hazards, said a press release.Published - October 14, 2025 08:25 pm IST
