You’ll find your favourite cartoon characters in their signature element, and some of them will even come dance with you or probably take a picture. You can stroll with Mickey Mouse, dance with Snow White, or ride a roller coaster through the darkest alleys.Tagged as the happiest place on Earth, the theme park is especially popular among kids, who form core lifelong memories here. For them, the sheer joy of watching their favourite cartoon characters in real life is unparalleled. Disneyland fully recognises this impact and has a special rule in place for its junior fans. As per the park’s official rulebook, none of the cartoon characters is allowed to let go of a kid’s hug first.Impressed by this adorable rule, we reached out to Arpita Kohli, a psychologist and counsellor at PSRI Hospital, to understand why it is important and whether all adults should follow it in their daily lives. She explains that allowing the child to decide when the hug should end gives them a sense of control, comfort, and respect for their feelings. “For many children, especially younger ones, physical affection is a powerful way of expressing love and connection. When a beloved character patiently holds them, it shows unconditional acceptance and care. Psychologically, this can be very reassuring,” she notes. She further explains that when children are given the choice to decide the length of a hug, it reinforces the idea that their emotions and needs matter. “This fosters self-confidence and strengthens emotional security. It also teaches children the importance of boundaries and helps them understand that they can choose how much affection they want to receive. This freedom helps them feel valued and respected, which is vital for healthy emotional development.”Why does hugging a favourite Disney character feel magical to a child? For children, Disney characters are not just actors in costumes, but proof that all the magical stories are coming to life. “Hugging a favourite character is like stepping into their imagination and bringing a dream to life. This physical closeness creates a deep emotional bond because the child feels as if their fantasy world has become real. It’s not simply a hug, it’s the merging of reality and imagination, which children experience as pure magic,” she notes. How do children interpret it when adults release a hug too soon, and what’s the impact? If a hug is ended too quickly by the adult, children may feel that their emotions are not fully acknowledged, according to the psychologist. “They may interpret it as rejection or believe that their need for comfort is inconvenient. This can leave a small sense of disappointment, especially in sensitive or shy children. Over time, repeated experiences of premature disconnection can impact a child’s willingness to express affection openly,” she further explains. Also Read | ‘Took me 44 years’: Sameera Reddy shares her experience of visiting Disneyland Paris for the first timeHow do such emotional practices shape a child’s (and parent’s) long-term memory of the park experience?Kohli notes that emotional practices, such as extended hugs, create powerful and lasting memories. “For the child, it becomes a treasured moment where their feelings are honoured, making the park experience deeply personal and unforgettable. For parents, witnessing their child’s joy and emotional fulfilment strengthens family bonds and creates stories to cherish for years. Such moments are often remembered far more vividly than rides or shows, making the park experience truly special,” she notes.
