The MLB championship series are underway, with four teams left battling it out for a coveted chance at World Series glory. In Game 1 of a best-of-seven National League Championship Series (NLCS), the Milwaukee Brewers hosted the reigning champions Los Angeles Dodgers. Dave Roberts fires a subtle dig at the 2003 Yankees team – which Jeter was a part ofX/ @MLBONFOXAfter a 2-1 victory to steal home advantage in the series opener, Dodgers manager Dave Roberts spoke to the Fox Sports: MLB crew with five-time World Series champion with the New York Yankees and Baseball Hall of Famer, Derek Jeter. There, Roberts – who has been the manager of the Dodgers since 2016 – playfully took a swipe at the 14-time MLB All-Star and the 2003 Yankees team. “I don’t want to bring up old sores to Derek, which I sort of do, because the guy’s got rings to cover up his whole hand,’ Roberts said. “It’s like what the Marlins did to the Yankees back then. The bunting, the stealing of the bases.“So this team feasts on momentum, havoc, and little ball, and try to kind of disrupt timing.”Roberts was, of course, referring to the 2003 World Series between the Yankees and the Florida Marlins (now the Miami Marlins), whose style of play in that series he has likened to that of the Brewers’ in the 2025 postseason. “Hey Dave! First of all, I don’t appreciate that,” Jeter responded. “This is the last time I’m talking to you in October, so good luck!”The Marlins wound up winning that series 4-2, and clinched only their second World Series title in their franchise history, despite being outscored 21-17 by the Yankees across the six contests. Roberts, Dodgers not ‘buying’ Brewers’ narrativeRoberts continued to discuss how the Dodgers will plan to attack the Brewers this series, and also fired a not-so-subtle dig at Milwaukee manager Pat Murphy. “We’ve just got to stay to our game, go attack these guys, play fundamental baseball,” Roberts said. “All this narrative that Murph’s trying to throw out there that they’re the little engine.Derek Jeter won five World Series with the YankeesGettyFreddie Freeman’s solo HR in the 6th inning sparked the Dodgers to victoryGetty“This team won the most games in baseball, so we’re not buying that. We gotta go out there and play good baseball and may the best team win.”Prior to the series opener, Murphy addressed the media on Monday where he appeared to be playing mind games with the opposition. “I’m sure that most Dodger players can’t name eight guys on our roster,” Murphy quipped. “No offense to them, they shouldn’t have to know the names, but these are some guys that hopefully they know their names by the time it’s over.”Earlier in this postseason, Murphy referred to his team as the “Average Joes” with right fielder Christian Yelich likely to be their most well-known star. However, this team also had the best record in all of baseball, finishing the regular season with a 97-65 winning record. Not only did the Brewers have home field advantage, but having met six times in the regular season, they had renewed confidence and the mental upper hand after sweeping their opponents 6-0. Blake Snell had eight shutout innings, allowing just one hitGettyTreinen’s lone strike out sealed a 1-0 series lead on the road for the DodgersGettyBut October baseball is a whole different ball game.In a low-scoring affair with exceptional pitching from both the Brewers’ bullpen and the Dodgers’ Blake Snell, it was the star power of Los Angeles that prevailed. Snell recorded just one hit in eight-innings, and made history by becoming the first MLB pitcher to face the minimum through eight innings of a postseason outing since Don Larsen in his perfect game all the way back in 1956. Freddie Freeman hit a solo home run in the sixth inning, with Max Muncy adding an insurance run on a bases-loaded walk in the ninth. This proved crucial, as the Brewers rallied late off of closer Roki Sasaki and loaded the bases with two outs, before 37-year-old veteran Blake Treinen entered the game to get the final out, striking out Brice Turang to clinch a 1-0 series lead for the Dodgers on the road. Now, all attention turns to Game 2 which will take place on Tuesday. Elsewhere Seattle Mariners have taken a commanding 2-0 series lead over the Toronto Blue Jays in the American League Championship Series (ALCS).
