The earthquake occurred at a moderately shallow depth of 23 miles beneath the epicenter early evening on Sunday, October 12th, 2025, at 6:52 pm local time. The exact magnitude, epicenter, and depth of the quake might be revised within the next few hours or minutes as seismologists review data and refine their calculations, or as other agencies issue their report. Our monitoring service identified a second report from The Incorporated Research Institutions for Seismology (IRIS) which listed the quake at magnitude 4.2. A third agency, the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC), reported the same quake at magnitude 4.3.Based on the preliminary seismic data, the quake should not have caused any significant damage, but was probably felt by many people as light vibration in the area of the epicenter.Weak shaking might have been felt in Kasilof (pop. 550) located 20 miles from the epicenter.Other towns or cities near the epicenter where the quake might have been felt as very weak shaking include Cohoe (pop. 1,400) located 22 miles from the epicenter, Soldotna (pop. 4,500) 22 miles away, Sterling (pop. 5,600) 23 miles away, Kalifornsky (pop. 7,900) 24 miles away, Ridgeway (pop. 2,000) 26 miles away, Kenai (pop. 7,700) 30 miles away, and Nikiski (pop. 4,500) 39 miles away.VolcanoDiscovery will automatically update magnitude and depth if these change and follow up if other significant news about the quake become available. It is commonly measured on the so-called Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale (MMI) ranging from 1 (not felt) to 10 (extreme shaking), and given in Roman numerals as I,II,...IX, X, and often displayed with color codes ranging from light blue to dark red.Earthquake intensity depends mainly on the magnitude and depth of the quake as well as the distance from the epicenter: The further away, the less shaking intensity occurs.Read more about the MMI scale!Number of reports by intensityShaking intensityNumber of reportsMin-Max distance from epicenter (*)Average distance (*)II: Very weak shaking237–76 km (23–47 mi)57 km (35 mi)III: Weak shaking140–40 km (25–25 mi)40 km (25 mi)IV: Light shaking354–56 km (33–35 mi)55 km (34 mi)Notes(*) Reports are filtered to exclude those that are likely highly inaccurate or esaggerated.Only reports with latitude/longitude coordinate positions given (6 in total) could be used for geographic statistics.I didn't feel itI felt this quakeIf you were near the epicenter and felt it, please share your experience and submit a short "I felt it" report! When aftershocks are detected, we will update this section. What are aftershocks?Larger earthquakes (above magnitude 5 or so) such as this one are usually followed by smaller ones known as aftershocks that occur in the same area during the days, weeks, months or even years after the main shock.[More info]What about this quake?Based on its magnitude, the fault that was active during the quake likely ruptured beneath a surface area of approximately 2 km2 (1 square miles) as a first-order estimate. The length of the rupture zone thus was probably around 2 km (2 mi).[More info]Recorded aftershocks, latest first (0 quake)Oct 12, 2025 06:52 pm (GMT -8)11 minutes ago - felt4.335 km0 km - This quake33 km ESE of Kasilof, AlaskaMain Shock (this quake)MoreMap of aftershocksEarthquake statisticsAverage number of earthquakesBased on data from the past 55 years and our earthquake archive back to 1900, there are about 2,600 quakes on average per year in the area near the epicenter of this quake (within 100 km/61 mi):Mag. 6 or higher: 0.08 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 12.5 years)Mag. 5 or higher: 0.44 quakes per year (or 1 quake every 2.3 years)Mag. 4 or higher: 4.4 quakes per yearMag. 3 or higher: 34.5 quakes per year (or 2.9 quakes per month)Mag. 2 or higher: 324 quakes per year (or 27 quakes per month)Mag. 1 or higher: 2,500 quakes per year (or 6.9 quakes per day)The area where this quake occurred has a high level of seismic activity.
