(Express Photo by Kamleshwar Singh)Amid growing public outcry over the BJP-led Haryana government’s ‘inaction’ in the alleged suicide case of IPS officer Y Puran Kumar, BJP leaders and allies have also started demanding strong action against the police top brass.BJP ally Republican Party of India (A) MP Ramdas Athawale, who is also the Union Minister of State (Social Justice and Empowerment), reached Chandigarh on Monday and met IAS officer and Y Puran Kumar’s wife Amneet P Kumar and other members of the deceased’s family.“I have sought time to meet Haryana chief minister (Nayab Singh Saini) and shall be talking to him about this,” Athawale said.“I met Y Puran Kumar’s brothers – one lives in Hyderabad and another in Mumbai. I met Amneet P Kumar and her father, too. Y Puran Kumar comes from the Dalit community. The family is claiming that Y Puran Kumar was subjected to casteist remarks and humiliation for a long time. Others used to do wrongs, and he was being accused of those wrongs… After a lot of struggle, he got into the IPS cadre. He was under so much pressure that he was forced to take the extreme step.“The family is demanding that action be taken against all those who are named in Y Puran Kumar’s suicide note. I have told the family that we are with them. There are allegations against DGP (Shatrujeet Singh Kapur) and former SP (Rohtak)… Action should be taken against both…” Athawale told media persons after coming out of Amneet P Kumar’s official residence in Sector-24.He added, “For the last nine and a half years, I have been part of the Narendra Modi government. I came here today as minister of social justice and empowerment, and since I also belong to a Scheduled Caste group… The entire country’s SC community is awaiting action in this case… It has been six to seven days since the IPS officer died… The Constitution that Baba Saheb Ambedkar gave is being insulted. Any kind of discrimination is not good. My ministry also takes note of atrocities. My demand is that all those named in the suicide note should also be booked for atrocities.”Meanwhile, Krishan Pal Gurjar, BJP Lok Sabha MP from Faridabad, Haryana and Union MoS (Ministry of Cooperation), said, “Our sympathies are with the bereaved family. It is an extremely unfortunate and tragic incident. We are of the firm view that the Nayab Singh Saini government will take action. Irrespective of their ranks, those who are responsible for this will have to pay the price for their deeds. I can assure everybody that the affected family will definitely get justice.”Story continues below this adLast week, Union Minister and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) president Chirag Paswan had written to Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini, demanding a high-level, impartial and time-bound probe into Y Puran Kumar’s suicide case.“It is known that on 7 October 2025, senior IPS officer of Haryana cadre, Y. Puran Kumar, ended his life by suicide at his (government) residence in Chandigarh. This extremely painful and distressing news has shaken the entire administrative circle as well as society. This is not merely the suicide of an officer but a grim indication of the deep-rooted caste-based oppression prevailing within our administrative system. This incident has spread like poison in the entire society,” Paswan said in his letter to Saini.“Today, if any officer is mentally tormented due to his caste, ideology, or integrity, it is not just condemnable but an assault on the soul of our Constitution itself,” Paswan further wrote in his letter. On October 7, Y Puran Kumar, 52, allegedly died by suicide at his Sector-11 private residence in Chandigarh. He had left behind a ‘final note’ construed as a ‘suicide note’ in which he had named nine serving and one retired IPS officer and three retired IAS officers and blamed them for forcing him to take the extreme step.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:Haryana
