More than 25 years after first stepping into the Star Wars galaxy, Ahmed Best is getting the comeback story fans didn’t know they wanted until now. Lucasfilm has announced an all-new one-shot comic titled “Jar Jar Binks“, bringing together two of the actor’s characters — the titular Gungan warrior outcast and Jedi Master Kelleran Beq — for the very first time. The project was revealed during Lucasfilm’s publishing panel at New York Comic-Con (NYCC), alongside several other Star Wars announcements. Co-written by Ahmed Best and Marc Guggenheim, the one-shot will unite Beq and Binks in an unexpected adventure.Credit: LucasfilmRelated: Here’s Why Jar Jar Binks Should Get His Own Disney+ SeriesFor Best, it marks a full-circle moment. The actor first portrayed the well-meaning but poorly received Gungan in George Lucas’ Star Wars: Episode I – The Phantom Menace (1999), a role that made him a household name —for all the wrong reasons, of course.Best reprised his role as Jar Jar Binks in animation numerous times, most notably in The Clone Wars series. However, most recently, he portrayed “Darth Jar Jar” in LEGO Star Wars: Rebuild the Galaxy. While the miniseries has plenty of fun imagining the Sith Lord version of the Gungan — which was dreamt up by fans years ago — that iteration of the character remains non-canon within the franchise. But with the upcoming one-shot comic reportedly set to deal with the consequences of the Gungan granting Palpatine emergency powers as seen in the films, Star Wars may finally bring Darth Jar Jar into canon. In 2023, Best reappeared as Kelleran Beq in The Mandalorian Season 3 — a Jedi Knight who rescued Grogu from the chaos of Order 66 on Coruscant, as revealed in a flashback sequence. Now, the two sides of Best’s Star Wars journey are set to collide in “Jar Jar Binks #1”, arriving February 2026. The comic will feature several collectible variant covers spotlighting both Beq and Binks, celebrating Best’s unique dual legacy in the galaxy far, far away.Credit: LucasfilmLucasfilm also teased even more from Beq, as the Jedi Master will appear in upcoming issues of “Star Wars: Jedi Knights” (#8 and #9), written by Guggenheim and Charles Soule, continuing the character’s expansion in canon storytelling. After decades of being one of the saga’s most misunderstood figures, Jar Jar Binks is finally getting his hero moment — and the man behind him is taking control of his own legacy. For Best, this isn’t just another Star Wars cameo; it’s a return home. Let’s just hope fans welcome him with open arms this time. Are you excited to see Kelleran Beq and Jar Jar Binks team up?
