‘Our quarterback went to jail’ – Jonathan Gannon gives ice cold response to reporter as NFL legend catches stray

Wait 5 sec.

Jonathan Gannon has been the subject of many NFL headlines of late. Ahead of the Arizona Cardinals‘ Week 7 clash against the Green Bay Packers, Gannon has once again opted against mincing his words to the media. Cardinals HC Jonathan Gannon has been the focal point of NFL media headlines recentlyGettyThe Cardinals head coach was asked when in his career it was that he had to learn to take the emotion out of coaching as it pertains to both player injuries and dealing with so many different players. His response was a blunt one and Gannon – who has come under fire for his controlled, almost computerized press conferences – could only issue an unfiltered, and blunt, seven-word response.“2007, when our Quarterback went to jail,” he said before an awkward period of silence. Gannon was referring to former Atlanta Falcons quarterback Michael Vick, who was arrested and sentence for his involvement in a federal dogfighting ring.At the time, Gannon was just 24-years-old and was in his first NFL role as the Falcons defensive quality control coach having left Louisville as a graduate assistant. An emerging left-handed star in the league who was only just entering his prime, Vick was subsequently suspended by the NFL for two years as he served 21 months in jail.He never played for the Falcons again, nor did he ever reach the heights of the potential he showed prior to the revelation of the scandal. When eligible to return to play, the former Fox NFL analyst spent five seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles, where he earned his fourth and final Pro Bowl nod in 2010.He finished up his career with one season with the New York Jets and then another with the Pittsburgh Steelers as a back-up quarterback.Meanwhile, the Falcons struggled in Vick’s absence, going 4-12 in 2007, missing the playoffs for the third straight season, and securing the No. 3 overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft, which they used to select future four-time Pro Bowler, Matt Ryan.Michael Vick was only just entering his prime when he was sentenced to jail time following his involvement in the Bad Newz KennelsGettyVick’s career soured after his return from suspension, never quite reaching the heights of his potentialGettyGannon very much under pressureGannon, who left the Falcons in 2007, returned to the NFL in 2009 as a scout for the St. Louis Rams (now the Los Angeles Rams), before going through a myriad of roles with various teams around the league, before taking on the Arizona head coaching role in 2023. Now, he is very much under pressure to deliver, with a 14-26 record midway through his third season at the helm. However, it was a shocking lack of composure in Week 5 where he was seen hitting running back Emari Demercado on the sideline that saw Gannon come under fire.Having navigated his way through the Tennessee Titans‘ defensive line and secondary, Demercardo was powering to the endzone for a certain 72-yard touchdown which would have put at least another six points on the board and given them a commanding 27-6 lead pending an extra point attempt early in the fourth quarter. But the third-year pro celebrated his highlight play far too early, letting go of the ball just centimeters – if not millimeters -before the ball crossed the plane of the endzone, ultimately taking the score off the board upon review and the play being determined as a fumble and subsequent touchback. Gannon is very much in the firing line after being fined $100k for assaulting his player on the sidelinesGettyDemercado was seen being hit by his HC following his fumble and touchback in the Cardinals’ loss to the TitansGETTYThis infuriated Gannon, but there is no debate that he stepped over the line when he aggressively hit his player which saw him slapped with a $100k fine by team owner Michael Bidwell. The decision to fine Gannon was slammed online, with many calling for the owner to have also sacked the Arizona coach. Demercado’s error derailed the Cardinals momentum completely, as they went on to suffer a catastrophic 22-21 loss as rookie quarterback Cam Ward – who has struggled at the start of his pro career – rallied his team to a comeback victory over $230 million Kyler Murray and co for what is their only win of the 2025 season so far.
