(Credit: Unsplash)At least 10 employees of a “fake” call centre were granted bail by a magistrate court, which observed that they were merely working under the control of the directors and manager. The Mumbai Police arrested the employees in September, after it bust the call centre in Vanrai, involved in calling American citizens on the pretext of renewing anti-virus subscriptions of their computers and luring them into purchasing gift cards. The money was eventually converted to cryptocurrency.“It is the specific allegation against the present applicants/accused that they were working as telecaller agents. They used to receive calls from American citizens and induced them to purchase gift cards. They also used to tell their false identity. It seems that their role is very limited to receive the calls and induce the citizens to purchase gift cards. They are the servants working under the control of directors and manager of the said call centre. The record does not show that they have actively participated in the business of Teammod Job Solutions Pvt. Ltd,” the magistrate court said in the order on October 8.The employees had said in their bail applications that they were only working as telecallers and followed the instructions given to them, with no knowledge about the offence. They also claimed that they were illegally arrested without notice. Police opposed their bail pleas saying that the crime was serious as they were cheating foreign nationals with a false identity for purchase of gift cards. The court held that the records show that they were arrested by police following legal procedure. The court said that their further custody was not needed, however, and it also considered that they are the earning members of their families. The court said that stringent conditions can be imposed on them to ensure that they cooperate with the ongoing probe. The court has directed them to be present before the investigators every week. They were directed to be released on bail on a personal bond of Rs 1 lakh.Stay updated with the latest - Click here to follow us on Instagram© The Indian Express Pvt LtdTags:call centre scam
