Gershom Rwakasanga, a senior engineer with the Uganda National Oil Company (UNOC), drowned Saturday evening after slipping into the River Nile at the scenic Busowoko Falls. His body was recovered on Sunday by sand miners working downstream. The tragic incident occurred between 5:00 and 6:00 p.m. as Rwakasanga, who served as UNOC’s Manager for Terminals Development and Operations, was taking photographs with his teenage daughter.According to eyewitness accounts, the engineer had approached a scenic area near the rapids to pose for pictures. Tragically, he is believed to have lost his footing on the slippery rocks and fallen into the powerful currents, where he was swiftly swept away.“In a few minutes, the daughter shouted ‘Daddy!’ when he had fallen,” recalled Ashraf Kitamilike, a tour guide at Busowoko Beach who knew Rwakasanga as a regular visitor. The daughter’s cries prompted immediate rescue efforts. Divers searched the area but were unable to locate him on Saturday. The following morning, sand miners discovered Rwakasanga’s body trapped underwater, entangled in their sand collection equipment. A local source confirmed the body was found with his wallet, money, and two smartphones.Authorities were immediately alerted, and the body was retrieved in a coordinated operation involving police, local leaders, and fishermen.Jinja City Deputy Resident Commissioner, Marine Kasonzi, confirmed that the body would be taken to Jinja Regional Referral Hospital for a postmortem before being released to the family. In a statement, UNOC extended its condolences to Rwakasanga’s family and colleagues, sending its “collective thoughts and prayers to all affected by this tragic loss.”Busowoko Beach management described the drowning as an “unfortunate incident and the first of its kind,” emphasizing that safety measures, including warning signs and guided precautions, are in place for visitors.Tributes for the late engineer have poured in online, with colleagues and friends remembering him as a good man whose life was tragically cut short. The post UNOC Engineer Drowns At Busowoko Falls While Photographing With Daughter appeared first on The Insider.
