Zinedine Zidane reveals dream job as icon outlines return to management plan

Zinedine Zidane wants the France national team job as he looks to get back into management. The football icon has only ever been in charge of Real Madrid and the club’s B team, RM Castilla in the 11 years since he began his management career. He was Los Blancos’ first-team manager twice from 2016 to 2018 and 2019 to 2021.In total, he was in charge for 263 games, winning the Champions League three times, two LaLiga titles and two Club World Cups as well.In 2018, after winning a third straight Champions League title, he stunned the football world by walking away from the post. The Frenchman returned just ten months later and stayed until 2021 when he resigned for a second time, stating that he felt the club had lost faith in him.And that has been that for Zidane‘s managerial career, but he’s now revealed he wants the Les Bleus job.Plus, a return to management is now on his mind.Speaking at the Trento Sports Festival, he said: “I’d like to be the head coach of the France team one day.“I will surely return to coaching. Me at Juventus? I don’t know why it didn’t happen. “I always keep that team in my heart because it gave me a lot.”Zidane won Coach of the Year twice when at Real MadridThe France job will soon be available with Didier Deschamps set to departGettyZidane to France?Given Zidane is one of France’s greatest players, it seems logical he would get the chance at managing them. His record for Real Madrid was top class, and Les Bleus players would surely be galvanised to play for a legend.Of course, it’s not like they’ve done too badly under Didier Deschamps, but the former midfielder has already confirmed that he will leave the job as national team head coach after the 2026 World Cup.Deschamps guided France to victory in 2018 and the final in 2022, while they’ve also won the Nations League and gone close in the European Championships twice. And speaking about his decision to step down, Deschamps said: “In 2026 it will be over.“In my head it’s very clear. I’ve done my time, with the same desire and passion to maintain France at the highest level but 2026 is [a] very good [time to stop]. Deschamps’ France sides have generally performed well at major tournamentsGetty“One has to be able to say stop, there’s a life after this. The most important [thing] is for France to stay at the top as they have been for many years.”There is no doubt Deschamps is one of France’s best managers, but the accusation has always been his inability to win more despite making so many finals and semi-finals.The only real disappointing tournament under his guidance was the delayed Euro 2020 when Les Bleus were knocked out in the last 16 by Switzerland. But in the two World Cups, they’ve been finalists at a minimum, and at the other Euros, they finished second in 2016 and made the last four in 2024, only to lose to eventual winners Spain. The natural successor from Deschamps would appear to be Zidane. He does mention Juventus in this interview, but if the French Football Federation come to him with an offer to replace Deschamps, it is hard to see how he says no.The fact he’s not taken another job since 2021 tells you all you need to know about where his heart lies, and it would probably be a match made in heaven.
